i know there are loads of threads on this, but my head is spinning, so thought i'd start a new one....
i have a 22mth old who has had bad nappy rash (inc thrush) over summer and just recovered from infected foreskin - i use disposable with him. db2 is due in nov - 2 lots of dispoable are very expensive amd so seriously considering cloth ones for either db2 only or both (very worried that i'll spend money on cloth to find ds rash bad again and end up back on disposable)
SO my question is: what do i need ...what is the best esp for newborn??? help my head is spinning..

I had two in nappies dd1 born when ds was 15 mnths. I did a combination of washables and disposables (eco friendly Moltex which dont use bleaches etc which is kinder to the environment but also to the baby). Which helped with the pocket and the pile of nappies smelling up the bin!
I used Bambino Mio back then (five years ago) and found them very good. The wrap can be used again, if there is no poo and I found it to be virtually leak proof. You use prefolds with these wraps which dry quickly. You could also use a microfibre insert which is very absorbant and also dries quickly; but must be prewashed at least 5 times (no need to dry inbetween prewashes).
I now use on dd2 the above but also pocket nappies. My favourite is Happy Heiny.
I would take the time to read through previous threads though to get the different sites to look at what is available.
One thing I would say is don't buy birth to potty packs. You may find that that particular nappy doesn't suit...
Hope this helps

What about contacting your council and find out if they have any discounts on washable nappies, or deals where a company washes them for you. Also there are schemes where you can borrow lots of different sorts for a fortnight.

I used this company

have had a look at trials website, which seem great, but very expensive not to own them at the end (we're a bit short at the moment) - can anyone just recommend the ones they found the best - don't mind buying diff brands, but don't know WHAT to buy - ie wraps, shaped etc..

For me, I say bamboozle or wambamboo (I prefer the fit of wambamboo, but some people prefer the attached booster in bamboozle) - they will fit birth to potty, so only one initial outlay.

You would need wraps to go with them - so many different choices again. If you want simple, then I recommend motherease airflows - you would need several different sizes for both children, but they are hard wearing, and don't tend to matter too much if you have a chunky and a skinny child iyswim. If you are open to other options then fleece and wool are more breathable & more gentle round the legs, but they do need you to be more on top of nappy changing and need slightly looser fitting trousers or it can seep through.

Liners - I love fleece liners - cheapest option is just to buy a length of fleece and cut it up yourself, but you can get it from nappy shops or ebay if you want them ready made.

Nappy rash - there SHOULDN'T be any worsening in cloth, but you can never say never I guess.

That was just a brief run down though - I can hassle you more if ya want

I second bamboo nappies. I got free onelife cotton nappies from my council. They were one size nappies almost the same as motherease. They were enormous on my newborn and didn't start using them until she was 2 months old. Once I got used to them, I bought some sized extras so she didn't have such a big bum. Some Ellas House hemp nappies (very snug) and some Kissaluvs (which are ok but not amazing) and bamboozles (which I think are BRILL)

Didn't realise the wambamboo were one size, so think when we outgrow the others I've bought, will consider them, and sell the other non bamboo ones.

Sorry for waffling but what the main points are
*Bamboo nappies are great
*birth to potty are best value
*sized nappies mean small bum and easier to fit under clothes

fantastic - feel like i'm starting to understand it all! managed to make contact with a local real nappy advisor/supplier in my area, and so hopefully she will let me trial some for a week - she is suggesting
Mothereaze one size
tots bots
fluffles
bambino mio
can any one let me know the ins and outs of these...thanks

i have just changed to cloth for my 9 month old and i use tots bots, rainbow bots, fluffles and bamboozles with air flow wraps and a fleece wrap at night. i love them. the rainbow bots and bamboozle are very slim fitting, the bamboozle is more absorbant for night time, i do use an extra booster though as DS still feeds quite alot during the night. thye fluffles are fast drying and the rainbow bots are reasonably fast too.

Raggydoll · 02/09/2006 11:18

my dd was 9mths when we switched so not sure about newborns but my recommendations are:

motherease one size - good allrounder/reliable
bamboozles - the best nappy i've used
tots bots - v.absorbent - good for night but i prefer bamboozles
kissaluvs - i would imagine these are good for newborns as they are a very fitted slimline nappy not at all bulky.

i have all of the above and i have never had a leak.

i also use one of my onesize nappies on ds (2.10) at night combined with a wool wrap - lovely. also never leaked.

CorrieDale · 02/09/2006 12:55

I'm not keen on the ME one size!!! Should be called Baggy-Bums-R-Us! DS is 14 mo & they're big on him. Not terribly absorbent either. But really quick to dry, as you might expect!
Tiots Bots are lovely and very reliable, if a little bulky and slow to dry. Fluffles are absorbent and fast to dry but that microfibre feel? Urgh, makes my fingers grate! Bambino Mio are very fast to dry because they're prefolds, and as long as you have a well-fitting wrap, they're OK.

sleepysooz · 02/09/2006 13:53

I have twins and when they were born I also couldn't afford 2 lots of nappies, we did try a combination and it just didn't work, but we do get family working tax credit that was new at the time, and more income so we used that!

topsy1 · 02/09/2006 15:04

what about wraps?

OP posts:
JennT · 03/09/2006 21:57

The wraps I got from the council were Bambino Mio. I really like them. Have tried One Life (same as Bambino Mio), Tots Bots and Funky wraps.

The Tots Bots are great on the Bamboozle and other sized nappies, but aren't as high as the BM wraps and not elasticated in the leg.

The Funky wrap is really cute, but not very practical. Very bulky, so best under a dress or Tshirt in summer on show, but then it's fleecey so warm.

Have ordered motherease wraps. Think they are similar to the onelife and bm
