Calpol after baby jabs.

DS just had his first lot of immunisations and I have bought some Calpol in case it's needed.

However, am I supposed to give him a dose as standard to prevent him potentially feeling crappy?

Or do I just wait to see how/if he reacts to the jab?

Hi Writer,

I'm a children's nurse and I do immunisations. I normally advise that if your DC becomes unsettled or has a temperature to give calpol. If you need to give more than 2 doses of it I advise going back to GP or out of hours to get them checked over. Some people do advise to give a dose regardless just to keep them comfortable. Either way is fine so it's up to you Smile

Research suggests it can affect the effectiveness of the vaccinations so only give if your baby is uncomfortable.

NoCupcakesOrCocktails · 23/05/2014 13:44

I was under the impression that research was related to giving paracetamol before the vaccine not afterwards. Have you got any links as I would be interested in reading it.

only give if baby is feeling rough (whiney, clingy, unsettled - you know what's normal for your baby)
don't give for 'just' a temperature, that's the immune system working, which is a good thing.
your baby might be just fine (mine didn't react at all).

NoCupcakesOrCocktails · 23/05/2014 13:50

I've just found it, really interesting reading. The research did find that a one off dose didn't make any difference but repeated doses of calpol did affect the immunity. So I guess it won't change my advice as I don't advise to routinely give it at work. I'll definitely be sharing it with some of my colleagues who I know advise to give calpol regardless.

That's just the first page on a basic Google search.

Hello

HCP here. Modem vaccinations cdon't often cause a spike in temp as they are much more advanced than a few years ago.

Calpol is only really needed if the baby had any soreness at the injection site.

So I would say only give it if the baby is unsettled or has a temp afterwards. Personally I wouldn't give it before as there is no real need to.

Your GP will be able to answer any specific questions about when to give calpol at your appointment.

Thank you everyone for your replies.

DS fell asleep as soon as we got home and he's still asleep now so I'll see how he is when he wakes up Smile

DS has been very sleepy since his jabs, is that normal?

He had them at 11 and bar feeding he has been asleep for the remainder of the day. I've also had to wake him for his feeds. When he is awake he is alert and he is feeding well but this sleepiness isn't like him.

I checked his temperature at 6pm and it was fine.

Am I being a paranoid mother or is this standard baby behaviour after their jabs??

I've two boys (3yo and 4mo) and both were very sleepy after all their jabs, and never needed any paracetamol/Calpol.

Ds2 had his 3rd lot last week (17weeks) fed at 4pm, bed at 5pm and didn't wake for another feed til 1am!! Completely unheard of with him, and not been done before/since.

SlinkyB · 23/05/2014 20:17

Oh, forgot to say mine tended to cry out randomly at times, in their long sleeps. Almost like they're having bad dreams? But a quick stroke of the head and re-insertion of a dummy helped Smile

smokeandfluff · 23/05/2014 20:17

Ds was sleepy for the rest of the day after his two and four month injections, was back to normal the next day.

mousmous · 23/05/2014 20:51

sounds ok to me. if not back to normal tomorrow I would get more advice, but so far it seems to be a normal and not too bad reaction.

Writerwannabe83 · 23/05/2014 21:55

Thanks everyone Smile

Knowing my luck he will be awake all night!!

DS was very sleepy after all of his jabs-slept for the rest of the day- the first night he slept through was after his 12 week jabs. He was fine the next day. We didn't need any calpol, but we did keep an eye on his temperature.

Cariad007 · 23/05/2014 22:05

DS was v sleepy after his first jabs. Different story after his second though - whiny, clingy and wouldn't feed or sleep!

Writerwannabe83 · 23/05/2014 22:42

Well he's just had a good 25 minute feed and has fell asleep in my arms.

Hopefully this indicates that I'm not going to have a hyperactive baby on my hands tonight Grin

How did it go last night writer? (Think I recognise your name from another thread btw...maybe hyperemesis support?).

Hope ds slept well and is back to normal today Smile

Writerwannabe83 · 24/05/2014 09:52

Hi slinky - you will no doubt have seen me somewhere, MN has been like my 2nd home for the last year Smile

He had a feed at about 22.45 and was asleep by 23.30. However, he then woke at 01.45 and was wide awake - he didn't go back to sleep until gone 04.00 Shock

He's been a bit irritable this morning but I think it's just because he's tired now. He's currently feeding and then I'm hoping he'll have a nice sleep!
