When and how did you ditch the dummy?

Considering getting rid of my 10mo dummy. Never seems a right time...how did you do it?

I did it at exactly the same age.

My son only had it for sleeping (ie before naps and bed). His sleep was even more rubbish than it had been earlier in his life, and I wasn't sure if the dummy was contributing to his half hourly waking overnight (it wasn't - the sleep remained rubbish for a long time after that, but that's a whole other story).

I just stopped cold turkey, and rocked him to sleep instead (before, he had the dummy AND rocking). It took a little longer to get him to sleep the first few times but it was soon forgotten. He wasn't particularly attached to it, though.

I was so relieved when I did it - hated carrying the dang things with me everywhere in case he needed a nap!

I threw them in the bin.

13m for cot time only, didn't give it on sunday night, stroked head till drowsy, slept all night, monday fretful and micro nap after lunch not normal 3hrs and stroking several times to soothe monday night, tuesday fell asleep in pram(rare) and fairly settled in cot that night, wednesday asleep quickly for nap and night and by thursday nap was back to 2.5-3hrs.

6yrs and 4yrs -when they wanted to.

Obviously by then they only had them at night or when ill.

I put them in a drawer until they were sure they could do without.

DD is 15mo and only has hers at sleep time. She says 'byebye' to it when she leaves the bedroom. We hardly ever have a problem with her losing it at night.

I'm not going to get rid of it until she can understand that 'big girls don't have dummies'. No idea how that will go or when - but it worked for my nephew!
