When to give Calpol?

3 month old DS had his second round of immunisations yesterday and is a bit out of sorts today. He feels warmer than usual to the touch so I took his temperature using an underarm thermometer and it was 37. I can only find conflicting information online - some places say a fever is 37.5 or higher, others say that when using a digital thermometer under the arm a fever is over 36.4. Am wondering whether to give him Calpol now. The nurse said only if he has a fever but I can't figure out whether he has one or not! Hope the more experienced mums on here can help?

It won't do him any harm to give him some, if you want to then do it.
I would (and have!)

give it to him if he is in discomfort (whiney/clingy you know him best).
don't give it just for a temperature, that's his immune system responding, which is a good thing.

Thanks both. He is being very grizzly so think I will try to give it to him. Never done it before so hope he takes it!

I agree that you need to look at him and give it if he is suffering and you know it will help. It's not necessary for a very slightly raised temperature if it is causing no other problems. Although the advice is not to give paracetamol for a fever alone, it's worth bearing in mind that NHS advice is that children under 3 months with a temperature above 38 or children between 3 and 6 months with a fever over 39 need to see a GP.

That post vax misery is horrid isn't it?

I have the Calpol but DS didn't really settle until an hour or so later when he napped for a couple of hours. He had a proper feed after he work from his nap around 4.30pm but it's now 4 hours later and he's had nothing more than a couple of 5 minute feeds. I put him on the boob but he sucks half-heartedly for a little and then pulls off. Is this a common side effect of jabs?
