DS is 8 weeks and over the last week I have seen a huge development in terms of his interest in things and his level of interaction.

He's reaching out for things, grabbing things, he can focus much better on our faces and other objects and is now smiling. I really want to encourage him to keep progressing so well.

Has anyone got any advice on what toys (for want of a better word) would be beneficial for him at this age?

I found a baby gym ideal at this age.

Playmat and baby gym. Anything with dangly bits to reach out to, books with mirrors in them, your face going peekaboo Smile

Don't buy expensive stuff til they are sitting up.

These links are good for grasping, mini tug of war, rattling and easy for them to bring to their mouth. You can connect them to other toys and have them on the pram etc.

This teether is a success with my four month old at the moment, very easy to grab hold of, bright colours with a gentle rattle in the centre, and can be put in the fridge for them when they are teething. It also acts like a bouncy ball when they are a little older.

Can't find a link but someone bought us a round wobbly soft toy that the baby can bat and it springs back up again, both of mine seemed to enjoy that from very early, seeing something react to their movement sort of thing.

Soft mirrors also good.

I also started reading board books to mine with them on my lap from around 12 weeks, they like hearing your voice and looking at the pictures, and they can reach out to grab the pages etc.

Yes DS (10 weeks) is spending a lot of time laying under his play gym on his sheepskin at the moment, he loves it!

Baby gym. I found that the really old-fashioned plastic ones (like the HV wheeled out from an ancient store cupboard) were better than the new-fangled ones.
