Looking forward to this with interest, I had ergo baby with dc1 and back went at 6 months but they're supposed to be good for backs! Expecting dc2 so need a new sling.

I borrowed baby Bjorn which was terrible for lower back!

I then bought a lifft sling which was easy to use, but because it goes over one shoulder, it's as bad as trying to hike with a handbag on one side, you unconsciously try to compensate by leaning and get a sore neck and shoulders.

So then I bought a wrapsody, which is just the same as the moby wrap but just a more breathable cotton, so not as hot in the summer. It takes a few goes but after a while you get the feel for it and can do it with your eyes closed! More importantly it was perfect for the back! You can feel all the weight is carried on the shoulders high up.

I bought one of these www.mumsnet.com/reviews/on-the-move/baby-carriers-and-baby-slings/9516-catbird-baby-piccolo as a good balance between fabric and structured sling and I really like it. You can get an extra hip band to help with the weight.

I have a hypermobile lower back which has given me trouble in the past. I got on well with a wilkinet sling. Find out if there's a slingmeet in your area so you can talk to users and try things on.

I have found the ergo to be pretty comfortable and carried my little girl for quite some time in it. Wide, padded and easily adjustable straps and you can wear it on your hips or higher at waist to suit.

I've got a Beco Gemini. It wasn't cheap but it's super easy and quick to put on and super comfy to carry in. It gives great lumbar support. You can use it in 4 different ways (including back carry) and it's designed to be good for little ones hips as they are developing. I've just started using it again for my second child. It's definitely been worth the money!!

I have a manduca, it can do front carry, back carry and hip carry. If you are front carrying there is an option to cross the straps on your back which makes it easier on your back.

I think manduka's are one of the best for preventing back pain - my chiropractor has one and loves it. I have a wompat, which distributes 8mo DS's weight well (and is pretty!)

Love my ergo and so does dh who has a bad back.

Funny, I just found the ergo either hit my lower back at it's weakest point, or my dodgy hip - I think it'll look for one that's more on the upper body, I suppose it does depend where your back is bad. Or it's possible I need lessons in using the ergo :)
