Post pregnancy hair loss

I had heard about how your hair can go a bit nuts after pregnancy and thought I had gotten away with it but for the last month I've been loosing big lumps of hair everytime I wash it,brush it or basically do anything. I've got really thick hair so it wasn't bothering me too much but this morning realised its getting really thin around my hair line. I've been wearing it in a ponytail to keep it out the way and stop it covering everything (the amount of hair we've pulled out my daughters mouth it unreal) but not sure if that might be damaging it more? i was hoping it would settle down on its own after a few weeks but no sign of that happening. Is there anything I can do to stop it and encourage the growth of new hair?

It's awful isn't it? I have thick hair and with my first two children the hair loss was fairly even and so not a problem but this time around my hairline has taken a real hiding.

Hang on in there, it'll come right. 3-4 months post pregnancy it often seems at its worst and then slowly comes right.

Lasts a few weeks then
Stops. Had it about 4 months after baby was born. Try not to panic. I have thin hair and was coming out in clumps like nothing I've known before

Nothing much you can do unfortunately - it's just a hormonal thing - lots of your hair follicles have been 'hanging onto' their hairs during pregnancy, and now they're all deciding to 'let go' around the same time.

Putting your hair back won't make any difference unless you're really scraping it back severely.

The important thing is, if you look at your scalp, or get someone else to look, you'll be able to see the new little short hairs coming in. That means it's doing what it's supposed to and growing back. It just gets a bit tricky to do anything with for a while, when you have lots of short bits and some longer bits. If it bothers you, you might want to get it cut shorter for a while, so it all grows longer together. But I just kept mine back and ignored the slightly fluffy-round-the-face look!

Yes I definitely recall this with all 3 babies. I found the worst bit wasn't the actual hair loss (clogging up the shower plug) but the regrowth - you get that weird, spiky regrowth all along your front hairline as the hair grows back. It looked so daft when I put my hair up (which I did loads when babies were young). I had a fringe cut with baby no3 as I could bare the silly fluffy regrowth. Just one of those things I'm afraid!
