Speech and a just turned 2yo

DS2 has just turned 2yo. He doesn't have many words at all - if I am being generous, all I can make out are "dadada" and "ish" (for fish) and everything else he says are just very melodic sounds.

He does a lot of pointing, and a lot of "huhuhuh" in a wimpering voice to let me know that he is unhappy with something or wants something, followed by pointing towards what he actually does want. He sucks his thumb a lot. He is a very happy, easy and independent child, but he loves cuddles too. I am consciously giving him time to respond to what I say, and asking him questions, giving him choices and repeating. He doesn't go to bursery: I am at home with him 2 days a week, and we have a nanny (my SIL) for the other 3 weekdays.

We have an older DS (6yo) who is now very vocal indeed, and he was slow to talk, but not this slow.

Any advice please?

Sounds normal to me. At 2 years both of mine barely said anything. Yet buy 2 1/2 they were speaking well in 2 languages. By 3 full adult conversations in both languages.

I think sometimes children take longer and process things before doing them. So they fully understand but don't do until confident.

Don't think nursery would help. Well it didn't with my dd anyway. Did you know that you can self refer to speech and language therapy?

For boys I was told one word by age one, two by age two, sentences by three.

(DS picked it up sooner. But it's a nice reassuring rule of thumb!)

Thanks artandco. My 6yo DS1 was slow to talk compared to his peers, as I said. But he had lots of single words at this age, and was starting to put two words together. I also did baby signing with him, so he was able to communicate in that way too. By 2.7 yo, he was starting to put 3 words together, and he spoke very fluently by the time he was 3.

Jilted, I have just looked into self referring. By chance, our local monthly drop in SLT is this week, so I might pop in.

Hia- I remember going to 2 year assessment with both and she really wasn't at all bothered by lack of speech at 2 years. She said it wasn't even a ' requirement' to check. Mainly can they walk/ how's balance/ do they interect with siblings/ relationship with parents etc

Maybe I'll hang on for a few months then! I am not at all concerned about him in any other way. I'm a much more relaxed parent to DS2 than I was and am to DS1.
