Question about toddler beds

How long did your toddler fit in a toddler bed? I am wondering if they are worth buying or not.

Thanks in advance.

Unless you are short of space I wouldn't bother. DD went from a cot beed to a proper grown up bed when she was two. She was a a real fidget so I put a bed rail on so she wouldn't fall out. She is nearly 14 and still sleeps in the same bed.

Should have said, we are short of space. We want to put our twins into bunk beds but feel they will be too young so want to transition them from toddler beds to bunk beds - no space for two single beds.

I think cot beds and toddler beds are same size, up to 4 years.
Have you seen shorty beds? www.rainbow-wood.co.uk/shorty_beds.html?gclid=CKmkjKrFn74CFQbMtAodejEAiQ
Maybe can give a bit use before bunk beds.

I do think toddler beds are a waste of money. DS went from cotbed to cotbed without sides at 2yo and then to a single at 2.6. I appreciate you can't get 2 singles in but realistically bunks won't be safe til they're 6+.

Would you consider something like this or would it not fit?

BertieBotts · 09/05/2014 20:22

Supposed to be 5-7 years but I don't know if they would last that long.

What about the ikea beds which extend later?

mousmous · 09/05/2014 20:25

dc1 is still in one at 7.5y
will move into a proper single in the summer, though.

mousmous · 09/05/2014 20:26

we also didn't have the space in our previous flat.

neversleepagain · 09/05/2014 20:33

Thanks for replies. Glad to hear some of your DC used them until 6 & 7 years.

sunshine I have considered your suggestion before and think it will be best for them to have their own bed rather than something that would be used for a guest. I don't want them feeling like they don't have their own personal bed and space IYSWIM.

We got a toddler bed as DD hated her cot so we moved her out at 18 months- first night she was in it she slept through for the first time ever!
Anyway, we went with a toddler bed because it was much closer to the floor and she can get in and out and it's not so far to fall

Beehatch · 09/05/2014 20:35

DS is 4.5 and still has a way to go in his yet

CalamitouslyWrong · 09/05/2014 20:38

Both mine stayed in toddler beds til about 4.5. They didn't run out of space in the bed so much as wanted a 'big boy bed'.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 09/05/2014 20:39

What about these?

Ds2 is 5.11 and a fairly average 1.18m tall. Unless your twins are really tall they'd fit until they're about 5 by which time they would be old enough for single bunks.

neversleepagain · 09/05/2014 20:42

Iwish - not sure if that is the right link? They are average, not very tall

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 09/05/2014 20:55

Sorry, I can't get links to work from that site.

If you select beds and furniture from the drop down search menu then type toddler into the free text box on the right, they are the first item that comes up, by the bunk cot Co.

We didn't get one for DD as we wanted to have the option of DH sleeping in her bed and her in with me if she is poorly. She also likes to have a couple of minutes of cuddle in her bed before we leave her to go to sleep.

littlesupersparks · 09/05/2014 22:03

My little boy has loads of space in his and he's 4. It is the same size as a cot bed. He was evicted from his cot bed because of baby brother. I imagine in a year or so at 5 and 3 we might get bunk beds for them.

unintentionalthreadkiller · 09/05/2014 22:09

We got toddler beds for our twins and plan on getting them bunks when they are about 5 or 6. We have no space for 2 full singles and they have lots of space I their toddler beds. We got the John Lewis 'Boris' bed but if they are in cot beds I would just keep them in those as they are the same dimensions as a toddler bed.

drspouse · 09/05/2014 22:16

My DN, a small age 7, can still comfortably lie down in DS' cot bed (they are the same size as toddler beds AIUI). So I'm hopeful for a while yet.

FamiliesShareGerms · 09/05/2014 22:29

DS went from a cot to a toddler bed at c18 months, then into a bunk bed at c6 years

£50 from IKEA was worth it for us as an interim step - we wouldn't have bothered if he had gone into a cot bed, say.
