There's that Muzzy thing they keep advertising on TV but think it's loads a m oney.
Had a look on ebay and amazon but nothing really coming up.
Do you know of anything?

Lottie is 4.5 and has Down's syndrome so nothing too advanced just want to encourage it and build on what she already knows from nursery. She can count to 20 in French, name all bidy parts and a few other bits but nothing major. Just want to gently build on what she knows.

TIA

Could try "Mimi : Apprend à compter" - it's
Maisy mouse.

The first Germ an TV that I understood was Winnie the Pooh. It has nice simple vocabulary, and they dont speak too fast.

Teletubbies are also good, as they are designed to help children to speak anyway. Disadvantage (?) is that they only introduce a few words.

I have my doubts about that muzzy thing too, I went to their website to see if it would be helpful for teaching the children g erman, and it was waffling about your children becoming geniuses if they are bilingual...I looked at my French/English children vegging in front of the telly and thought hmm....

Thomcat, I'd also look out for Dora L'Exploratrice etc. Is there a small girl on the planet who doesn't love Dora?
Definitely agree that stuff already familiar in English is the best way to let some more French sink in gently. The only bits of Muzzy I've ever seen look pretty creepy and unengaging tbh.
If Lottie would also like looking at picture books there are loads of really nice ones to be had in the books sections of the channel port hypermarkets.

Thomcat · 28/08/2006 23:26

thank you.
So is French amazon the place to look for these things?

Marina - books from channel port hypermarkets - ? How do i get those then? Sound good but..?????

Well, I'm going in December (early) so am quite happy to pick you some up for Lottie's stocking if you like.
They have this sweet little character Tchoupi and his Doudou (toy/companion) as well as all the Princesse Barbie and Angelina petite danseuse pink nonsense you could ever wish for. I'll CAT you nearer the time if you like

CrotchetyCow · 28/08/2006 23:49

Thomcat, Amazon in the UK have a range of bilingual (Catharine Bruzzone is excellent, I can give you a link to a few we have and like if you like?) books in a range of languages and they also have single language books. I just ordered an Italian children's book for my computer illiterate MIL and my mother's partner ordered a load of bilingual and French stuff for her reception class from there.
If you dont see anything you like and want it sooner, I live in Switzerland and would be happy to send a few over in exchange for a few English books for my book obsessed daughter.

CrotchetyCow · 28/08/2006 23:53

Forgot to add, we have a couple of CDS of French nursery rhymes etc, aimed at 0-5 year olds, if you want a copy I can see if my DH can run you off one on his computer (I'm assuming this is possible, he is quite technical at these things, I am not...if you hadnt already noticed.)

Thomcat · 29/08/2006 09:58

Marina and Crocjerty cow, that would be AB, thank you.

MArina if you CAT me nearere the time we can work something out, that would be lovely.

And crochetycow, the links would be most appreciated, as would a swap. How old is you DD and I'm sure we can sort something out together.

Thanks SO much.

We subscribe to Popi magazine for dd (2.10).

popi magazine

It's aimed at 1 to 3 yr old French kids, but I think as a second language it could interest children much older. You can have a look at an issue of the magazine on the website above. It's not cheap really but it's great to have it land on your doormat every month, and I find each magazine lasts really well [unlike any cbeebies-type magazines which never really last more than an hour]. It's really cleverly done, with the same characters coming back each month and DD loves going back to old magazines.

Thomcat · 29/08/2006 10:23

Lovely, thanks for that link

Oh what a cute mag Adad!
I havw tried to interest ds in Pomme d'Api which is for older children but he unaccountably prefers Dr Who Adventures and the Beano
Will do TC, am going on 4th December.

hulababy · 29/08/2006 10:31

We have the Usborne First Fun with French DVD which DD enjoys. Only £7.99 on PLay, and some Asda's have it in for £5 - so a bargain. It is a French Usborne family. The little girl talks English and French, and you spend a day with them soing every day things like visiting grandparents, going to the park, shopping, play time, bathtime and bedtime. We have the First 100 words book to go with it too.

Thomcat · 29/08/2006 10:38

You all rock, big thanks

aDAdOnMumsnet · 29/08/2006 10:38

It is cute Marina, and I dont see dd tiring of it for a long while, but when she does, Pomme d'Api is the next one up, and still contains some of the same characters I think, like Petit Ours Brun, who she really likes.

Bilingual First Books -simpler than Lucy Cat- they also come in Spanish and I think German too.

They also have Colours,Opposites, Clothes, Animals, Toys and Food. We own several of these and like them and these were the ones my mother's partner got for her reception class.

I dont have CAT so my email address is historywitch @ hotmail.com

Thomcat · 29/08/2006 12:41

We've got Muzzy and there are also the Berlitz kids packs (especially good for us as my son is called Nicholas and the hero of the books is Nicholas). I agree that Muzzy is a bit off-putting at times - maybe more of a boys thing?
