i have tried calpol and nurofen separately but they aren't doing anything. i was considering using both together, but would like to hear of your successes or failures by doing this before i decide.

We found that this works. You do know to alternate them, don't you? (sorry, don't mean to sound condescending!) Good luck!

I'm not sure if i've used it for teething, not been necessary for us, but I have used it for high temps when DS had tonsilitis and DD had ear infection.

I didn't give Calpol and Neurofen at the same time though, gave a dose of Calpol and then 3 hours or so later gave a dose of Neurofen. I gave the next dose when the effects were wearing in off, taking into account how many doses of each can be given per 24 hours.

Also, have you tried teething powders? Mine both seemed to benefit from those, and DD chewed on clean flannels, wrung out and put in the freezer.

UrsulatheSeawitch · 28/08/2006 20:32

It's a 4-hrly dose for Calpol, 6-hrly for neurofen, so you can give them both at once but then repeat the Calpol after 4 hrs, neurofen after 6 hrs, Calpol after 8 hrs and then both together again after 12 hrs (repeat as necessary )

I've done it - a nurse did it when DS scalded himself, so I reckoned it must be OK to do it for teething. But I only give one dose of each in 24 hours - just to help during the night. Otherwise, we use Anbesol liquid.

Thomcat · 28/08/2006 20:35

Not for teething but when she was v poorly I gave her (8 months) a spoon of calpol and then a spoonful of nerofen. She stopped crying within minutes, having cried for 2 hours, and slept peacefully the rest of the night.

Wouldn't do it usually but when in dire need it worked for us.

malteser1 · 28/08/2006 20:37

Hi,
I've used both together following advice from a doctor to treat high temps as DD suffers febrile convulsions.
UrsulaSW is right as far as I've been told with the timings for dosages.
DD also enjoyed chewing on frozen waffles - worth a go!

Saturn74 · 28/08/2006 20:37

Same here - have done it when DS1 was delirious with v. high temperature, and it worked wonders. His temperature lowered and he was sleeping peacefully within 10 minutes or so.

saltire · 28/08/2006 20:56

I also did it with Ds 2, both together, on the doctors advice. Ten followed the same dosing patterns as Ursula.

thekidsmum · 28/08/2006 23:08

I usuall give them both together for the first time (kind of a double whammy) then calpol 4 houly and nurofen 6 hourly for teething.
As my children have v high temperatures i usually give them both together, some times every 4 hours Never had a problem. You may want to ok it with your dr though for your own peice of mind

Flossam · 28/08/2006 23:10

They are fine to be give together, either at the same time or slightly seperated depending on how bad the pain is/ and or whether the first lot seems to work.

TitianRed · 29/08/2006 13:14

Well, I've learned something new here today. Sorry my advice was a bit off!

kitbit · 29/08/2006 20:04

We've done it when teething was REALLY bad. A doc told me you should leave 2 hours between the doses of each, ie give Calpol first, then wait 2 hrs then give Nurofen. Then 2 hrs later you can give Calpol again if you really need to. Also more effective like this as it keeps the pain relief topped up and doesn't wear off after the recommended interval leaving them hopping about waiting for the next allotted time. Don't just keep going every 2 hours though, take into consideration how many doses are allowed in 24 hrs. Think everyone else has said most of this but thought I'd post it anyway!

Mzjackson86 · 15/03/2019 17:28

You can give both at the same time. It's not a problem the doctor told me to do it when my little one had a sore throat and swollen tonsil and it works much better than spreading them out.

Jackshouse · 15/03/2019 18:37

I’ve done it. My dr friends do it with their children. Also look at anbesol oil (not gel).

SnowdropFox · 15/03/2019 19:22

We asked this exact question as oyr weee one os teething too. Our pharmacist said (last week) that until they are 6 years old it is not advised to give them both. Only under doctors advice.
