Just curious as to how everyone sterilises their bottles

As per guidelines we make up a bottle when needed, we have a prep machine so it's easy peasy but I'm wondering if people sterilise every time they open the steriliser?
My one keeps bottles etc sterile for 12 hours as long as not opened so I presume that once opened to take bottle out then I need to re sterilise so that means sterilising 6 times a day?
That's what I have been doing so I just wonder what others do

Mine are 8-13 years but once I stopped breast feeding I would sterilise the bottles using a microwave steriliser then make up all the bottles with water adding the formula once the baby needed a bottle. They were happy to have it at room temperature but I would warm if appropriate. I think I have read since that is really bad but I am not going to lose sleep over it given my children were all fine.

Don't worry I'm the first to admit that I buy crap that I prob don't need although I'm not too bad, I've known worse! The prep machine literally makes it in 2 mins, you add powder then put under nozzle for hot shot of boiling water, shake then under again for filtered water to nice drinkable warm temperature. When I was making bottles with kettle it took me about 20 mins in all allowing kettle to cool etc. I know some things are a faff and a waste of money but for me it' was worth the 70 quid I paid, I got it instead of a new pair of jeans and tops I wanted ( I decided to lose baby weight and fit into old clothes, still trying!)

I got my perfect prep for £48 thanks to a well timed Amazon sale Grin So glad I bought it, it's really so useful.

How is it different from water from the kettle though?

I'm interested, not having a go! Grin

Chocoholism · 16/05/2014 18:56

It's not really dame it just takes less time than boiling kettle, leaving to cool then making bottle and cooling more if needed, that took me about 20 mins as current advice is to make bottles up as you go. Prep machine is practically the same just takes 2 mins.:)

Tbf, I used to buy litre bottles of ready to feed - I'm sure I spent a heap more than I needed to I'd bought formula. Also meant I have a dd who will under no circumstances drink warm milk only fridge cold.

CuriosityCola · 17/05/2014 09:09

The prep machine was a lifesaver for me. Some formula (comfort) separates if made in advance. It would have made night feeds horrid waiting 20 mins for the kettle to cool.

(I bought plenty of other crap to balance out my good purchaseSmile)

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 17/05/2014 09:49

Why do you have to wait 20 mins for the kettle to cool? Oh God, things were SO different when I had ds. Glad I'm not a new mum now, I'd be hauled off to social servicesGrin

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 17/05/2014 09:51

Actually if you are meant to make a new bottle every time the machine makes more sense now. In the middle of the night I used to grab a bottle from the fridge and microwave itGrin

TheScience · 17/05/2014 10:02

You are supposed to boil a litre of water and leave it for up to 20 minutes to ensure the water is at least 70 degrees when it comes into contact with the milk powder to kill any bacteria present.

Artandco · 17/05/2014 10:02

I don't get the machine. Can't you just boil kettle. Add hot water to bottle, wait 2 mins so its 80 degrees rather than boiling. Add powder. Add lid etc and run under cold water tap so it's right temp. 5 mins max

I would just sterilise so clean, then take bottles out and put in cupboard ready to use whenever. How do you sterilise when out? Surely you just take clean bottles from home?

We just used Milton in small tub as mainly breastfed with occasionally bottle if I wasn't around. Dh def just cleaned in hot water, in Milton, then clean bottle or two in bag nd when out. Used carton formula though

Artandco · 17/05/2014 10:03

Oh yes it's ages if you wait for whole kettle to cool to 70 ish, but 4-8oz in bottle cools quickly

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 17/05/2014 10:06

So if it had to be at least 70 degrees then it doesn't matter if it's hotter?

TheScience · 17/05/2014 10:08

If it's boiling I think there is some suggestion it might damage the nutrients in the powder, and there's a risk of scalding yourself/baby.

Chocoholism · 17/05/2014 12:15

With all this new information and old ways of doing things and everyone having a different way of dojng things, you can see how new mums get confused and just do what advised by experts. It's bloody confusing though!

Completely agree choc!

WeeClype · 17/05/2014 20:32

Choc.....I have a 6 month old DD, she's my 4th and believe me I'm still bloody clueless!

Littlebean13 · 17/05/2014 23:28

Couldn't agree more choc. I remember being adamant I was going to bf ds & that was that. Got a shock when it didn't work out and I had to ff Grin
I didn't have a clue how to make a bottle up & so many people did it differently that I got extremely overwhelmed & ended up doing it by what the experts advise.
