Toys for 6 month old??

This seems pretty basic but can anyone give me ideas of toys my 6 month old might like? I feel like she's bored just chewing on the same teething toys so wanted some ideas and where to buy! We got bought so much stuff this is the first time I've had to think about it! She can't quite sit up on her own yet but can in a bumbo. We don't have loads of space - or cash. Thanks so much in advance for any ideas!

Hello, this thread is quite old and some of the suggestions are a little out of date. Take a look at our round up of the best toys for 6-12 month old babies for the latest Mumsnet user recommendations.

Thanks!

Some balls or toy cars to roll at someone else, who can return them
Some wooden spoons to bang about. Maybe with a big bowl or pan. Sat at the table (in high chair), with a load of uncooked or cooked pasta, jelly, rice krispies (make a fab noise when yuo crunch them under your hard)
Basic musical instruments to shake (bells, maraccas)
Soft building blocks.
Bits of fabric in different textures (silky, demin, teeshirt). Paper and foil if you keep a close eye.

Nothing fancy, but just lots of things that make different sounds or feel different!

Books to add to the good list the pp suggested Smile

My DS has loved me reading to him since he was about 5-6 months old, he smiles when I get a book out! He likes playing with them too (the small ones anyway) just holding them and waving them around!

Books also last a very long time so work out as cheap toys IYSWIM, because he'll probably be able to read them at 4-5!

A friend of mine gets books from the pound shop and charity shops to keep costs down Smile

Books with lots of flaps and touchy feely pages. Stacking cups, blocks, stacking rings, basically anything small and able to bang together, put in and out of boxes etc. Mine wasn’t so interested in musical toys by then and more into.things she can make her own game with iyswim. Empty bags of wipes, bags of crisps, rice in a water bottle, little empty boxes.

The pound shop is great for baby books I agree, we got some little ones with a rattle in and a nice squishy bath book. TK Maxx is good for books aswell, we’ve paid £3-£5 for some really nice ones.

Ooh I never thought of tkmax! I will have a nosey there tomorrow Smile thanks

I'm always surprised at the stuff my 5 month old finds interesting. It's always some mundane household object.

At the moment he loves playing with muslin cloths and loves it if I wave two above his face.

He also plays with weaning spoons.

Apart from that we found the Lamaze toys a huge success with him (some good deals on amazon), and ordinary cloth balls.

Thanks so much everyone, brill ideas! I never thought of tk max so will check them out and some of the home made ideas are fab too!

I would never buy kids books new, if you are on a budget then charity shops all the way! We never pay more than 50p & have a bookcase full of lovely books.

Other than books I would recommend an activity table, the top comes off to sit at floor level but once they are standing they can stand up against them playing with buttons etc on the top then move to cruising round it. They are expensive new but check gumtree, local to me they are always coming up for £5-£10

Dd loves the lamaze toys. They have so much going on it takes her ages to get bored with them. I have 4 and rotate them so it's like she is getting new toys!

She is also rather partial to my silicone pastry brush.. but she is an odd child. Grin

The works is really good for baby books, they always seem to have them reduced. I managed to get dd loads of board books for 99p each and two cloth books for £1.99 each.

Oh and one of dds favourites is a small fanta bottle with dried pasta and rice in it. She loves watching the rice fall from one side to the other and the pasta makes a great noise. If you wanted to get more creative you can dye the rice with food colouring to make it multicoloured. I''ll stop now!

We've spent a bomb on pfb toys. By a long way his three favourite things to play with are a muslin, a sealed pack of wipes and my hand! He loves his Sam Lloyd books especially "Calm Down Boris".
