Too small for Moses too big for cot, what now??

My 4 month dd is starting to out grow her Moses basket. We have a really big cotbed(didn't look that big in the shop) in her room but no way am I ready for her to move into there just yet. So what nxt?

I know the logical thing would be for her to now be moved but she's so so good, sleeps all through the night but she sometimes fidgets and I lean across and hold her hands until she drifts back off so I definitely know she still needs that comfort and reassurance that we are still there. Was maybe thinking a crib but again not sure if she'll be too big for it..... Help!!!!

TBH I'd go for the cot, I put the basket in it for a few nights to get them used to sleeping in it first.

Can you get the cotbed in your room?

Buy one of the small cots from Ikea - cheap and bigger than a crib?

I had this with DD2, very large baby! Outgrew her Moses Basket at 3 months. I moved her into the cot and slept in her room with her. Not ideal but not catastrophic either! I wasn't ready to let her sleep by herself at 3 months so needs must.

Dd was huge. She couldn't fit in the moses basket by 10 weeks so we bought a cot bed. She was TINY in it!
She didn't seem to mind though. because she didn't sleep anyway

I got a cot from netmums notice board for free and put that next to my bed with the side down until ready to move ds into cotbed & own bedroom. It was a bit of a squish in the room but not for long and he definitely loved the cot - started sleeping with his arms stretched out at the side.

We bought a very cheap cot from Mothercare and put it next to our bed for several more months. We took the side off and used it as a co-sleeper. It was brilliant.

travel cot? could use that for a couple of months and would then have it for a spare or if you go away

Madamecastafiore · 06/05/2014 20:59

A sleepyheads. Goes in the cot bed. Can get them from John Lewis. Dd 6 months and super tall still in hers.

Rainicorn · 06/05/2014 21:00

What about this. It's about 15cm longer than a Moses basket and 10cm wider.

WeeClype · 06/05/2014 21:01

I've got a cot beside my bed, that way I can reach thru the bars and give my Dd a gentle pat if she wakes up. She's my 4th and I wish I had done that with my other 3 as it's so much easier than going back and forth to a different room.

Jaffakake · 06/05/2014 22:27

I'd get a travel cot, the odds are you'll use it in the future so not a waste on £.

RandomMess · 06/05/2014 22:40

Travel cot is a fantastic idea, mine used to have their day time naps in it so they would sleep in it anywhere Grin

Some of them come with baby bassinettes so you could still reach over easily.

Dd2 is 11 weeks and about to outgrow moses basket. Have just put it inside the cotbed frame (not on mattress) for a few nights and then will remove basket, put in mattress and put her in a baby sleeping bag. Can't fit cotbed in our room so also have sensitive baby monitor set up - though we do live in a small flat, and her room is right opposite our, so with the door open, we can hear everything anyway. We did all this with dd1 and had no problems, so hoping dd2 will be equally ok.

If you do get a travel cot, maybe think about getting an extra mattress to go on top of the one that comes with it as they can be quite thin and I always thought our dd slept better on a thicker, more comfortable surface... Measure your travel cot mattress and then look online.

We moved our daughter from the Moses basket to we big cot bed at around 10 or 12 weeks, we would have put her in we own room to be how at, but we didn't have a curtain in there, so we squished the cot into our room until she was about 5.5 months. At that point she was sort of "sleeping through" but made a lot of noises and grizzles around 4am for her dummy. Once we moved her to her room, she stopped waking (or, more likely, she continued to wake but settled herself as we didn't hear her) and truly did sleep through the night. Except now teething has come with avengence, and she's waking up crying, gah!

wheresthelight · 07/05/2014 10:43

My dd had to go in her cot at 3 weeks as she is a fidget bum and the moses basket was too small for her thrashing about and she kept waking up

If the cot will fit in your room I would move it in there and pop her in that. Otherwise the cheap cot from ikea is a brilliant idea

yellowsnownoteatwillyou · 07/05/2014 10:51

My ds is in a travel cot with a proper mattress, when he was really small he slept in the bassinet part, first width wise then the normal way, he eventually went into the bottom bit at about 5 months as he was too heavy.
I never wanted a proper cot as I don't like the idea of babies banging into the bars and our house is too small with no storage so was planning ahead.

42andcounting · 07/05/2014 18:13

We got a travel cot with a bassinette in it, and I just padded between the mattress and sheet with cosy blankets (pfb). The added advantage of the bassinette is that you can rock it with just fingertips from your lying in bed position if you want to.

She's just moved to her big cot at almost 7 months, and we plan to move the travel cot downstairs for daytime naps (hah!) / use as a playpen.

MummyLuce · 07/05/2014 19:49

Same issue here. I'm going to go for the cheap idea cot option. They're really good. Did the same with dd1
