using tap water

If we can give our 9MO tap water to drink, why can we not top up formula with it once we have boiled and cooled the kettle water etc?
Or can we?

If you are in the uk tap water is fine from 6 months. Not sure about the bottle question. I know the water had to be 70 to kill the bacteria in the formula but don't know about topping up the bottle after.

There's some info on cups and drinks here if that helps and making up bottles hereSmile

If you ask MNHQ to move this thread to the Breast and Bottle Section., someone in there may know Smile

Powdered formula can contain very nasty bacteria that can make a baby seriously ill. By using water above 70 degrees, you kill any bacteria present. Ready made formula is heat treated and doesn't have the same risk. Tap water is suitable for drinking in the UK.

Do you mean pour the water into a premade bottle (with formula and water already mixed)? No, you can't do that as the water to formula ratio needs to stay as it says on the packet.

And the water has to have been boiled before mixing with any formula. Most of the products say to let it cool for half an hour so it's around 70 degrees which is a safe temperature to work with.

Giving just water on its own out of the tap without pre-boiling is fine though

Do you mean use 3/4 ounces of boiling water from the kettle and 3/4oz of tap water so it cools the boiled water? So you have an 8oz bottle? I often wonder the same thing.
I have read that if you are giving them the bottle straight away it can be cooled to less than 70degrees as the bacteria don't have time to multiply before its given. But I have heard a million different things about how to give formula it makes my head spin.

I always err on the side of caution, but I know my DH just uses cooled water from the kettle (that was boiled an hour is so before) and had been doing that for about a month without me knowing, when my LO was 9months+ and he is fine. But I still always do it hotter, then cool it down in a bowl of cold water, then fridge.

I do it. I didn't realise you shouldn't Blush
I do two ounces of just boiled water, bung in 6 scoops of formula, give it a good stir and, bung in 4 ounces of tap water and hand the cup to dd. I've done it for months.
Dd hasn't been ill yet, have I just got lucky? I thought as long as the formula had been in the boiled water to begin with it didn't matter

Use cold water from a britta filler to top up with. I have a perfect prep machine and that just filters water. It gives a shot of 70 degree water to mix the powder with and then tops up with cold filtered water, just like the OP describes.

You can

LittleBearPad · 06/05/2014 23:50

Yes you can do this. You need to use boiling water (or above 70 degrees anyway) to kill the nasties in the formula but you can then top up with tap. So 6oz bottle fir example, 2oz hot water, mix with six scoops powder and add 4oz tap. You have to premeasure the 4oz separately though and can't just fill to the 6oz line in the bottle as the powder will displace some of the water.

I used to top up to cool down with blue top cows milk . Both mine had cows milk with ceral anyway from 6 months

JiltedJohnsJulie · 07/05/2014 21:09

They can have full fat cows milk with cereal and with cereal from 6 months. Just not as there main drink Smile
