New mattress needed for toddlers move to big bed?

Hi,

I know the advice is new baby, new mattress which I did and was happy with.

What about if I am planning on giving DC2 the bed that DC1 has used for two years? Would I need to get a new mattress for that or would she be okay just using the one her brother has used? Am planning on getting DC1 a full size single and giving Dc2 the extendable bed.

Thanks,
TOOIK

I was under the impression that new mattress for each baby was part of reducing the SID's risk. I don't think that it is relevant if the child is old enough to be going into a bed. If the mattress is in good condition I can't see any point in changing it.

As long as there isn't a dent where your ds has laid on it it should be fine. I did the same with my ds and dd2, when dd was too big for her cot we moved her to a toddler bed with the sprung mattress that ds had used for about 18 months before he got a single bed.

It's mainly a SIDS risk for new babies but also for their spine if the mattress has moulded to the shape of the first child ( more common with foam mattresses).

My sons mattress was 12 months old . It hadn't been soiled in anyway but I was so petrified of the SIDS risk we bought another one anyway. It would
Of been fine I'm sure.

I would say it's fine. Newborn babies are different to older children.

Thanks, it is an Ikea sprung mattress for their extendable bed
