The Continuum Concept

I can't see this subject already written about, sorry if it is, please tell me where if it has, if not, has anyone else read The Continuum Concept by Jean Liedloff?

I found it fascinating and am now even more keen on using the sling. I haven't used the pram for weeks and when I see tiny babies in prams I want to tell the parents to take their baby out and hold it close to them!

For those who haven't read it, I would say that TCC is about how babies have learned to expect to be treated through evolution ie lots of body contact and not to be left in various special baby seats and prams etc and to sleep with the parents/family. Lots of other stuff too but that's the easiest bit to get your head round.

I would say that a lot of it is hard to do in ENgland in 2002 but I thought it a very thought provoking book and would love to hear others' thoughts.

Purp, in answer to your question, yes, this subject has been covered somewhere here and generated lots of comments. I can't remember the name of the thread - think it was something like 'how much should we cuddle our babies'. The messages started veering off the topic, (as often happens , then a new discussion on this concept resumed months later on the same thread.

Hope this helps.

Purp, if you are really interested there is a web site based on the book too www.continuum-concept.org

One extract which I thinks sums up the concept beautifully is "having caregivers immediately respond to his signals (squirming, crying, etc.), without judgment, displeasure, or invalidation of his needs, yet showing no undue concern nor making him the constant center of attention; "

Try doing a search on Mumsnet using "Continuum Concept", Purp, as it was being discussed just a week or two ago. HTH
