Signing for DC's UK passport when I'm not a British citizen - advice needed!

Has anyone who is not a British citizen signed their DC's passport application? DS is 5 months old and was born in the UK (DH is British, I am not). After filling out his passport form carefully and traipsing across London to get a friend with an 'acceptable' profession to countersign the form and photo, I brought it to the Post Office for their 'check and send' service. The guy told me that as I am not a British citizen, I shouldn't have signed the form on DS' behalf, it should have been DH, so I have to fill the form out again.
I took his word for it, but on closer inspection the small print in the 'declaration' section relating to nationality says 'I, or the person named in Section 2 of this application(if different) am a British national and have not lost or given up my national status'. The person named in Section 2 is DS, who is a British National as proven by his birth cert!
So I think the PO worker was mistaken. Does anyone have any experience of a similar situation? What would happen, for example, if both parents were not British? I need to send it off urgently and it will be a real pain to have to get the countersignature done again (seriously, they need to update their classification of 'acceptable' professionals).
Thanks in advance!

The rules are very strict & I would trust PO person to have right info. You might go ask in another PO to be sure (they didn't charge me when I just asked them that kind of specific question). I think I was British by the time I signed DS's so I haven't had your problem.

Boy do I sympathise with the counter-sign. problem. I had to ask for countersign. for DS THREE TIMES before the sig was right (argh).

I would trust the small print over the PO worker tbh

Thanks for the replies. I took it back in this morning and another person said it was absolutely fine and was surprised I'd been told otherwise. He stamped and sent it off so fingers crossed!!

Unfortunately they will not process your application without a response from the counter-signatory Sad If you think he won't get back to them I would phone the passport office and ask what to do. They may make you fill out another form but obviously you don't want to pay again so not sure how that would work. I'm sure they will advise, but it might take a while to sort out. Good luck!
