Constipated baby..

So my baby is struggling with constipation and I'm not sure what will help, I've tried water and massage etc but it's not helping. She's on hungry baby formula and takes around 7oz and she's a month old, she is pooping but it's practically solid and she struggles to push it out. Does anyone know what will help? I've heard that trying a spoon full of baby food fruit as she may not be getting enough nutrition and that will help but I'm not sure. I know hungry baby can make them a little constipated but nothing is helping.

What were the events that led you to change to hungry milk? Is changing back to first formula an option?

victoriaspongecake · 26/04/2014 19:41

from when my children were babies, many years ago, the recommendation was a teaspoon of freshly squeezed orane juice or a teaspoon of brown sugar in a small bottle of water.
disclaimer! advice may have changed since then..but both worked well!

Nonstoppeppapig · 26/04/2014 19:42

The only thing that worked for our baby was aptamil comfort formula. He was on it until he was past a year as the only thing that kept him regular.

Could you give her cooled boiled water? I wouldn't think you should be giving her anything other than formula or water at 1 month old.

sonlypuppyfat · 26/04/2014 19:47

I might be clueless but has your own milk gone? Can you express some and give your baby that? My babies were never constipated it was very loose. This might be stupid advice apologys if it is.

MostlyCake · 26/04/2014 19:51

If you're able to bf at all, you drinking orange juice can help. Sorry if this is useless advice....

babyfedleaning · 26/04/2014 19:57

Hungry milk is not advised until about 8 weeks of age and 7 oz at a month in age seems quite a lot so I doubt her gut is coping well. Have you asked your HV for advice on this? They told me only to give DS2 one feed a day of it once he was 8 weeks. Are you using normal formula the rest of the time? You really mustnet feed solids of any kind til she is 17 weeks minimum, and no gluten til 6 months.

LittleBearPad · 26/04/2014 20:00

That seems a big feed. Why is she on hungry baby milk?

ilovepowerhoop · 26/04/2014 20:00

hungry milk is not suitable for a 1 month old baby - go back to first milk and feed to appetite.

AmIGoingMad · 26/04/2014 20:04

I'd agree with first or comfort milk. I also used to put one scoop less of the powder when making up milk if dcs were bunged up or would offer cooled boiled water if very bad but this was very rare indeed and I felt that the tiniest adjustment by one scoop less was giving them the cooled boiled water in a gentler way.

Jessiewilliamsxx · 26/04/2014 21:07

She is a big baby and was taking so much normal formula that it was making her sick, I've tried boiled water. I never breastfed and my milk has been gone for abit so I can't even try that otherwise I would, I will try brown sugar and water, thank you :)

Also was advised to give her hungry baby which has stopped the sickness and satisfys her thank you, you can use hungry baby from birth if needed, her only problem is constipation, her feeding is fine. She has been on atleast 4oz since she was born and the midwife, health visitor and doctor said it was fine.

Another vote for getting her off the hungry baby milk it might be fine for young babies (id dispute that) but sounds like its not good for yours.

At that age don't give anything other than formula or some cooled boiler water but it seems early for that too.

I had a milk monster never went more than hrs between feeds how often Is she eating maybe smaller feeds more often could help?

Jessiewilliamsxx · 26/04/2014 21:23

She takes too much normal formula for her to keep down, she has always been a big baby. She can pretty much fit Into some 3-6 clothes(to give you an idea of her size) and I was advised by the doctor, midwife and health visitor I try hungry baby which has helped a lot. She feeds every 4 hours or 5 and her feeding is fine. At night she goes 7 hours. I do not need advice on her milk as I know my baby and trust my midwife/ health visitor and doctor. I'm just asking if anyone's home remedies helped and changing her formula back isn't a option due to the normal formula making her sick.

1oz pure prune juice, mixed with 1oz boiling water. Let it cool. It's like a magic elixir for constipation.

PenguinsLoveFishFingers · 26/04/2014 21:30

She's only feeding 4-5 times in 24 hours? That really doesn't sound much. A one month old baby wouldn't generally go 4-5 hours between feeds in the day. It sounds like this could be linked to the digestive issues she is having. I think you need to go back to the HV.

WipsGlitter · 26/04/2014 21:37

We did the brown sugar thing. It worked!

ExBrightonBell · 26/04/2014 21:45

Why would you rather "home remedies" over nipping back to the HV or GP for some medical advice? If she's that constipated at 1 month old surely she needs seeing by someone?

Mildpanic · 26/04/2014 21:46

I think you need to go back for some further advice? She is on the large side and going such a long time between feeds for such a young baby. If she was being sick a lot before after large amounts then I suspect she was taking more than she could manage.
Hungry baby milk is not a good idea at such a young age as it always causes problems with constipation. ( in my experience) it is akin to sticking a cork in.
Please do not give sugar water. It is not advised. I have recently had experience of a consultant paediatrician advising a teaspoon of fresh orange juice in some boiled water for a young baby but I am not sure that is research based. Rather based on his experience, not something I would feel happy to recommend, but it worked.

ilovepowerhoop · 26/04/2014 21:47

feeding every 4-5 hours at 1 month old is not 'normal'. She would be better on normal first milk or comfort milk not hungry milk.

ilovepowerhoop · 26/04/2014 21:49

she would be better on smaller feeds more often rather than large amounts infrequently

Jessiewilliamsxx · 26/04/2014 21:58

Feeding every 4 hours is normal for a newborn baby thank you very much, I have been told this by my midwife, doctor and health visitor along with the many midwives at the hospital once I had her. I have been to the doctor and he said the feeding is fine and there is nothing he can give for constipation to a month old baby other than suggest boiled water which is what my midwife also advised. that is why I am asking for home remedies as this hasn't worked. Like I have said her milk is fine as I've been told. And like I have said normal formula makes her sick. The only time she goes more than 4-5 hours for a feed is at night which the longest is 7 hours. I do not need criticism for her feeding as I've been told by many doctors, midwives etc that it is fine as since none of you are as qualified as them I am only asking for home remedies that you found worked in this instance.

ExBrightonBell · 26/04/2014 22:07

I think people were trying to suggest things that might be useful. You didn't ask just for "home remedies" in your OP, and you also didn't say that you've seen the GP/HV/midwives about it already etc.

The things people are suggesting might help the constipation eg feeding less more often, and/or switching back to first milk. Do you think that she won't feed more often than 4 to 5 hours?

ilovepowerhoop · 26/04/2014 22:15

1 month old babies dont need home remedies and you wouldnt normally give (or need to give) water/sugar water/orange juice/fruit puree to a newborn baby. We were trying to give ideas that would stop the constipation rather than having to treat it all the time.

You are unwilling to admit that other things might work now and you are not willing to try alternative milks as suggested. Newborn babies tend to go 2-3 hours between feeds not 4-5 hours.

PenguinsLoveFishFingers · 26/04/2014 22:26

People are responding to you as they are because whilst some four hour gaps might be normal, 4-5 hours generally between feeds is not normal. 5 hours is massive for a newborn. People aren't going to pretend that it is and focus on 'home remedies'.

Fruit purees, sugar water, etc are not your issue. You can get angry at everyone, or you can take that on board.
