Weening..

Now my daughter is only 5 weeks so I'm obviously not weening her anytime soon but I'm wondering when people have weened their children, as my daughter is a big baby and has been on hungry baby since she was a week old and it's now taking 7oz or more sometimes and I've got a feeling that milk isn't going to satisfy her for long and I'm wondering if anyone experienced this with their babies if they had bigger hungier kids? Etc

The current advice is to wean at 26 weeks or if they show the signs of readiness earlier.

Unfortunately very little that you can feed them before 6 months will have the calorific value of formula, so she could end up more hungry, not less.

What is it that makes you think the milk won't satisfy here for long? If she is drinking more than recommended on the carton, that is only a guide. Like all things, some take more, some take less.

Have a look at the MN Weaning info, it's very good as is the MN weaning forum Smile

you have said on another thread that your dd is constipated and goes 4-5 hours between feeds - introducing solids early is going to make that worse. Hungry milk is also not the best option at that age.

It is advised to wait until 6 months before weaning and definitely not before 17 weeks at the very earliest.

ds was 23 weeks when weaned 7 years ago.

If your baby is constipated and going 4-5 hours between feeds, you need to go back to normal formula and it's normal for 3 hourly feeds at that age.

I agree with pp.

Having weaned my ds, now 2.6, I've learnt they digest very little of what you give them at the beginning. Milk is what they need, definitely for the first 6 months & food really us for fun till they're one. Next time I'll wait longer to wean & won't stress so much about completing the process.

6 months. It’s medical advised as early weaning can lead to life long health problems. If you wait until 6 months there is no need to do purées.

Hungry baby milk is not good for babies. It’s normal for a baby to need milk every 3 hours. If your baby needs a large amount of milk then give a large amount of normal milk.

hello. my baby is also a "chunky" baby for its age. i do not know what to do as he will not stop eating. i handed my baby a big mac and its scoffed the whole thing, i mean i do not body shame and i am very proud of my son but i do worry about him. would appreciate advice.

NotMaryWhitehouse · 20/01/2022 16:17

@crazymummaof14 what?! You gave a baby a big Mac.....?

Alitlebitsleepy · 20/01/2022 17:00

@crazymummaof14

I think the advice would be to wait to introduce solids until 6 months. Provide 3 nutritious meals (not a big mac!! Really important to minimise salt!!). Healthy snacks too if they're hungry.
