How long does potty training take?

DS (2.9) has been potty training for about 3 weeks now. He has made very slow progress, but I definitely think he is better now than when he started - loads of accidents, but longer gaps between accidents and more likely to ask to use potty than previously. However, he definitely hasn't really 'got it' yet.

Alot of people seem to say that there is no point potty training until a magic point is reached, when children suddenly train themselves. I am therefore a bit confused about whether I should be giving up now and trying again later. I am fairly patient and DS doesn't seem too stressed by the whole thing. Should potty training always take a matter of days?

Whether its one week or several months, it always feels like it takes far too long till they crack it! If you're not worried and he's not stressed, just keep going with the slowly slowly approach, he'll get there when he's ready. Honestly, it will just suddenly come to him! I have a trainee in residence, same age as yours, and he only sits on a potty in between nappy changes at the moment. He hasn't a clue when he needs to wee, but likes to sit anyway. I think if your lad is happy around potties and knows what goes in them, thats always a good start, but don't totally give up otherwise he might get confused. Just keep doing what you're doing, it'll happen eventually!

I would keep going tbh. Each child is different and some will takea few days some will take much much longer. Hes getting there, maybe you did tsrta too early for your ds BUT he is learning to hold it now with longer between accidents so he is getting there.
