Ours have 4.5tog synthetic quilts and are comfortable in them right now and also in winter, even though 4.5tog would be far too cold for most adults in winter. On hot summer nights they use cotton blankets, but often ask for the quilts in any case as they like them so much. I prefer down quilts, but chose synthetic ones for the children because I can machine wash them at home. Make sure you get the sort of quilt that has stitching into cells, rather than long channels, as the filling can migrate down channels especially if you launder it a lot.

my 2.9 year old has a 10.5tog duvet for colder nights and a 4.5tog for warmer weather (which she is using just now)

Dd is 5 and has a 4.5 tog one. In the summer she usually just has a sheet, in the winter the duvet and a pair of thick PJs is fine. They don't seem to need the same weight of duvet as an adult does.

We bought one of those dual feather ones (no allergies/asthmas/excema) - 9 plus 4.5 where they button together. DD (2) who is in the colder room and is a colder child has the 9, her brother (4) who is always hot has the 4.5.

4.5 duvet
add blanket in winter (tucks in at both sides for extra cosiness)
