Help with 8 week old and formula

Hi :) hoping for a bit of advice pls, my little girl is 8 weeks old and has been on SMA first infant formula since she was born, she currently goes every 3.5-4 hours in the day between 4-5 ozs each feed and then in the night she tends to go anywhere between 4-7 hours depending on time of last feed. The last 2 weeks she's been being sick pretty much every feed it's not like she's bringing the whole feed back up but there's enough! Abd she never did this, alot of the time she's really wriggly throughout the feed aswell, I stop half way through to wind her and always gets wind up after the feed aswell. after the feed she's quite grumpy aswell for a hour or and seems like she's got tummy ache! She's pooing fine every other day and it's normal. Do you think she might not be getting on with formula? I don't think it's reflux cos she's quite happy most of the time :) and doesn't scream in pain or anything, although she does cry at times afterwards but nothing major, would you change formula? And if so any recommendations ? I've heard hipp organic is gentle on tummies ? Thanks Charlie :) x

Reflux doesn't have to cause pain hun! I wouldn't change formula without speaking to your hv as they get pretty arsey about it!!

It could be a touch of colic, my dd always brought wind up hut went through a phase at about the same ages asyyours of having a bit of colic. Maybe try some infacol or colief for a couple of days and see if that helps?

If she is grumpy could she still be hungry? Have you tried maybe upping her feed by am ounce and see if that helps settle her?

Have a chat with the HV hon. It may well be mild reflux so it might be worth trying these ideas out before panicking into getting new milk (my dd had bad reflux until she she 2.5 years old, we now think it's to do with something else but these tips from HV did help a lot).
Keep you dd upright for at least 20 mins post feed.
Prop up the head end of the mattress (if she's in a Moses basket, I'd use a rolled up blanket).
Do an extra winding session per feed and use Colief.
Also, is she a guzzler? My dd loved her milk warmed up but I stopped doing it because she would inhale it and then bring it up with more force. She didn't enjoy it as much but room temperature had to do.
FWIW my dd never cried or whinged with her reflux, she sometimes had a moan and a cry but on the whole, she was a chirpy bird. The projectile regurgitation was a bit bothersome though!

A friend had a smiliar issue and swapped to Dr Brown bottles. They have a tube down the middle which seems to help the wind/vommy reaction, and she swears by them.

PansOnFire · 21/04/2014 21:13

My DS was the same, Dr Browns bottles were the only thing that stopped it altogether. He was still a little bit sick after his feeds but nothing compared to what he was like before them. He was a lot more comfortable during and after his feeds too. Against advice we laid him to sleep on his side which helped him to sleep much better, we also had the Moses basket raised up at one end which we then did with the cot once he moved into it. I hope you find a solution soon. Congratulations on your LO :).

Brilliant thanks guys :) she's already on dr browns bottles teat 2 as the number one teats she was falling asleep all the time and bottle was taking 45 minutes! She currently takes about 30 mins each feed this includes stopping half wAy ish to wind, I don't think she guzzles really, I make up 6 oz bottles all the time just incase she's ready for more bit she normally stoppes at 4.5oz-5oz and rarely takes much more than 5 think as you say I'm best talking to hv I have her 8 week check on this week so will ask then :)

She just fed her now got 4 good burps and done trumps! And she's fast askeep in Moses basket! No sick either!and no wriggling! Dunno if it's just bad wind ! Bless her other than this she's so happy and content and such a good little sleeper , don't want to think she's in pain poor little mite Hmm thanks for the advice :) xxx

She may have had a bit of a tummy bug. It's not unusual with formula fed babies (and I'm really not being a judgypants) because the more something is handled the more chance there is of some kind of contamination, either in the manufacturing process or as it's made up or on the bottles. That's why it's really important to follow the guidelines about 70C water and sterilizing all formula bottles until baby moves on to cows milk.

Glad your little one is better now though :)

darcydoo2014 · 21/04/2014 21:46

Hi :) aw I know your not :) I'm sure it's something to do with her tummy she goes quite stiff when she cries and I can just tell from the way she crying that it's a painful cry ifswim?! I'm a first time mum so have had no experience with it before! I sterilise everything and make sure bottles are made with hot enough water (straight from kettle). As I say this feed was fine we have the occasional feed that is ok but mostly she's sick and grumpy afterwards, I use gripe water a bit but try not to use it a lot as don't want anything to make it worse! But gripe water usually moves any wind (can hear it gurgling in her tummy) and results in more burps - I've just heard from a few ppl that some babies find SMA hard to digest (don't know if it's true) so just though that could be the issue Hmm its so hard to know!! Xxxx

Sma gave my dd horrific runs so it could be the milk but if she is going stiff then it is more likely trapped wind. My dd can burp and trump after every feed with very little effort but she still had some that wouldn't come up. Gripe water was pretty ineffective to be honest but infacol was a bloody miracle worker!!

Gripe water won't make anything worse hun so innit is working when you use it then keep using it and definitely speak to your hv.

I am a first time mum so I know how you feel! Everything is so bloody scary! I am lucky my dd is dp's 3rd or I would have had her to a&e about 100 times in her first 3 months!

wheresthelight · 21/04/2014 21:58

If it's not innit poxy autocorrect!
