Clothes for 6 month old- NOT leggings!

I have an irrrational fear of leggings- don't like them for myself, babies or children even though I know I am against most of the world on this one! My DD is coming up for 6 months and I am starting the gradual transition away from sleepsuits into 'real' clothes.

She always ends up with plenty of pretty dresses anyway as people buy them for her as gifts but I need some ideas for comfy day to day clothes. The problem is that all the outfits for baby girls I see consist of leggings and a tunic top which is a style I just don't like! Anyone have any ideas of where I can get nice soft trousers?

Will trousers be too hot for the summer though (she types looking out of the window at the rain...)

DD also has a lot of dresses and tights, but though I'm not mad keen on leggings I did find them useful during the crawling period - I hate shoes on non-walking babies and like them to be barefoot indoors, but when DD was crawling she needed something on her knees to prevent them getting sore, so I ended up with leggings and tops. I had a few pays of soft knitted trousers - Gap do nice wool ones in the winter - but comfy though they were, they didn't work for crawling (too loose). I hate the leggings under dress look, but otherwise poor DD got very rough and sore knees.

When DD started walking I breathed a sigh of relief and went back to tights and dresses, or (which I really like), tights and little cord knickerbocker shorts with smocked tops and blouses, which I think look fab and are very practical and comfortable. The shorts are from Boots and Gap.

*pairs not pays!

I have a lot of light cord dungarees for DD, and boots rompers.

Leggings are good for the crawling stage, soft and pliable so they can move without restrictions. Have found that DD gets caught on dresses when crawling in them.

Leggings are pointless if they wear reusable nappies though as most don't fit

Smerlin · 21/04/2014 17:30

Ok glad I'm not the only anti leggings person! Thanks for the list of ideas - I am off on a big shopping trip tomorrow to get rompers, dungarees and trousers from wherever I can track them down- so much sold out online. Loved the Cambridge Baby ones too but sadly sold out in her size.

Babygro and dungarees. Every time. No socks to lose, very little to put on, in fact you can just wallop on the dungies on top of the sleepsuit.

Artandco · 21/04/2014 19:44

Smerlin - that's a shame, it appears try are last seasons so sold out. Keep an eye though as I guess that within a month they will have next seasons colours etc. we have brought them since four years ago and they just change colours etc generally each year

The French baby shops sell tem more generally. Look on bibaloo, vertebeut etc

MTC Did she have a vest on or those overpant type things? How old was she? I can't remember what age they stop doing those squelchy poos.

I personally don't like dresses or skirts until they have stopped crawling as they just get in the way.

traininthedistance Do you hate the leggings under dress look for babies, toddlers, older kids and adults? What about under jumper type dresses, skirts and shorts? I think they don't look too bad with denim skirts/shorts and jumper dresses.

traininthedistance · 22/04/2014 18:46

Actually I quite like the look on adults and sometimes wear it myself in the summer or did until three extra stone of baby weight - I dunno, I think it's just the proportions of babies and toddlers are different.

And then they need socks and shoes which looks a bit odd with leggings - adults normally wear flip flops or sandals without shoes with leggings but I like babies and children to wear socks to avoid hot sweaty feet and blisters... Just individual preference I guess! :)

traininthedistance · 22/04/2014 18:54

And I did sometimes put some leggings under nice baby dresses when DD was in the squelchy poonami stage for exactly the same reason as MiaowtheCat - I had a couple of massive poo leak experiences! But DD was mostly in babygros anyway until she started to crawl lazy mummy and they do look so comfy

GoodnessIsThatTheTime · 22/04/2014 19:22

I really don't like leggings on babies either. We had dungarees, lots and lots of them! Then dresses and vests or baby gros.

beccajoh · 22/04/2014 19:28

I had some harem style trousers from H&M for DD when she was a baby. I kept her in sleep suits mostly until she was about 9 months. People always asked me why she was still in her pyjamas lol!

beccajoh · 22/04/2014 19:29

My preference is dresses/skirts and tights.

nappyaddict · 24/04/2014 16:59

traininthedistance A lot of the babies I have seen with leggings on wear just socks cos they aren't old enough for shoes or trainer socks and shoes, sandals or baseball pumps with them for the older ones. I agree about them looking odd with socks and shoes.

Light coloured tights really do not last well I seem to throw a pair out each week. Light coloured leggings last much longer
