Toddler's behaviour following arrival of new baby

DS arrived 9 days ago. DD (aged 2.7) is struggling with this, and her behaviour has taken a major nosedive. She has always been so sweet & gentle, but is now so aggressive and argumentative - I can hardly recognise her. I know it's to be expected and understandable, but I'm finding it so hard to cope with, especially as I'm majorly sleep-deprived. We are giving her loads of one-on-one time, but she is still tantrumming constantly (can count on the fingers on one hand how many tantrums she's had before DS's arrival).

I feel so conflicted - I know it's so hard for her and I feel guilty, but I'm also nearing the end of my tether.

Have others experienced this? How long can I expect until she starts to come to terms with the change?

Hi, not much help but my DD went in to massive tantrum mode at this age, but I was still preg with DD2 so obviously not linked. So it may be partly the age she is at & would have started anyway.

Be careful you are not over compensating for the new baby's arrival & making her feel that the baby is obviously a bad thing or you wouldn't be trying to 'make it up' to her all the time. Also a top tip I learnt from MN was to 'tell' the baby when when it was DD's turn for your attention eg 'Sorry baby but you need to sit in your pram while I help DD with her shoes' or 'We're going out now because DD wants to go to the park'. It doesn't have to mean doing anything different to what you would have done, but vocalizing that it's for DD's benefit might help her feel better about the times when the baby has to come first.

Good luck, having 2 is hard work!

Thanks Shelby, and I think you're right in that I am overcompensating a bit. Am hoping things settle a bit once the number of visitors we're having subsides, and my DH is back at work. Think DD is acting up as a result of being a bit spoiled by everyone's eagerness to make sure she feels involved, as well as new baby jealousy!
