Reusable nappies without breaking the bank.

Mrsthedog and I are expecting our first child in October, we would like to use reusable nappies but have noticed that the lovely looking bum genius ones can cost as much as 20 pounds each.
Do any of you lovely mum'snetters have any advice.

I saw these on flea bay and wondered if they are just as good or at least good enough? www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111195221856?var=410226843545&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Our local council will give us 30 pounds towards our purchase and I guess same for our Parents in law. Also how many will we need and will we need different ones at first? Some seem to suggest they are good from 8lbs but who knows how big our baby will be? All advice welcome.

Those look like the kind we bought, and they served us well.

in theory they're fine even from birth, unless baby is seriously teeny, but you might want to get a set of about 5 small sized ones, too.

Where are you based? because we have a collection we've been meaning to offload...

Congratulations, BTW! Grin

PedantMarina we're based in Essex but have ties in Gloucestershire so often up there too. Thanks for the response.

Thanks for the advice comicsansisevil and mrsthedog would agree with your user name.

I've bought one to have a look at, it was under four pounds with two inserts . I have no idea what to judge it against about. I'm considering buying on of the expensive ones that get great reviews to compare them.

regarding the nappy refund it just says you have to have bought some new ones not anything else.

Ebay cheapies are fine as long as you get a good fit - which goes for any brand actually. They didn't work for us as ds spent so long between the poppers and we got leaks; they were on for a few weeks then off for a few weeks! You may also find you need more boosters for them, or to experiment with them.

I worked out that my stash of Easyfits and Miosolos, bought on 3 for 2 in Boots/Tesco/Kiddicare, will be 4p per wear over one child.

You will probably want different nappies for day and night - day nappies last 3-4 hours on average, and I'm buggered if I'm changing that often over night!

PedantMarina thanks, have responded.

PurplePidjin thanks so it's suck it and see a bit then? won't know what fits until we get our baby :-) could we fatten the baby up to fit the nappies I wonder? :-)

I wish I had tried more nappies before committing to a brand- the nappy lady website and others offer trials and also a 'prescription' based on a detailed questionnaire which is a great starting point. Also I would highly recommend disposables for the first month whilst newborn poo is so sticky and tar like. Try washable wipes too- I'm evangelical about them!

PurplePidjin · 18/04/2014 16:46

yeah. imagine shopping for shoes. you don't just buy the nearest pair, you find a style that suits and fits Wink

I am a BIG fan of Alva baby nappies. They are on eBay but more range on their own website. I've been using them for a year now and they easily measure up to the really pricey bg elementals I also forked out on. I use them with one microfiber and one bamboo and never leak. Only thing is they're pretty big. I think they only fit my average-sized girl from 3 months. They do do tiny ones though. They ship from china though so take a good 3 weeks to arrive.

It is Real Nappy Week next week so you should be able to pick up some bargains.

Try disana tie ons, they are £2 each and dry really quickly. One size from birth, but you need wraps too.
I loved them with my ds.
