5 week old screams when we take her out of the bath

My 5wo DD loves bath time in her little baby bath and screams when we take her out. She will calm a little if we immediately wrap her in a towel but won't be calmed fully until she is dressed and I can feed her.

I'd really like to try baby massage, and the crying seems to negate the point of a calming routine. The rooms are warm, with the bath temp at the top end of normal as she didn't like it cooler and would get upset if cooler temp.

Any ideas/suggestions?

I guess its just the shock of the change in temperature. You're doing the best thing by wrapping her up, cuddling her and feeding, in a few short months she'll be crawling around happily naked and will scream (like my dd) when she has to get dressed.

Baby massage might be better done at a different time, it doesn't have to be after a bath.

I think it doesn't matter how warm the room is, it's always a shock when you come out of nice warm water because the air on your wet skin feels cold!

I used to take DS out and cuddle him in the towel, you don't have to wait until she's dressed to feed if that might calm her down.

Oh yes, you could use the opportunity for some skin to skin contact, it'll get her temp adjusted quickly and be just as good as a baby massage

DD was the same, screamed blue murder from the second she was lifted out of the bath, until the second the bottle of milk touched her lips.

We used to take it in turns to do the bath, as it was so stressful. I used to be sweating with the stress of it.

She grew out of it eventually. Just get her dried and dressed as quickly as you can, it won't last long. Honest. Smile

My DD used to do this too so you are not alone. We found a new trick recently though. Now we get her lotioned and dressed in the bathroom which is still steamy rather than taking her to her room. Now we have no screams!

No suggestions to add other than feed her / cuddle her wrapped in the towel for a bit of skin to skin and get her dressed in the bathroom.

I just wanted to say, like others here, mine was the same and it will stop, I promise.

Thanks for all the replies! Will try massage at another time, just assumed that was how it was 'done'. I guess I don't feel myself after a bath until I'm dry and warm so understandable she would be the same.

Both my baa ides did this until about eight weeks. Assume it was because of the change in temperature.

beccajoh · 14/04/2014 16:27

baa ides = babies Hmm

She's complaining less each bath time, managed to get her calm before fully dressing her today. Result! Smile we might be able to do massage after all.

I guess she just needed to get more used to it. She used to scream bloody murder through every nappy change too for a couple of weeks.

Glad it's getting easier for you and she's less upset.

Lozzapops · 17/04/2014 09:16

Mine is the same, she is 6 months now, it is very draining and I can't wait for her to grow out of it (please god, let her grow out if it!).

But with regards to the baby massage, we do it before the bath. Actually, I should say did it before the bath, she has become far too wriggly and squirmy to get a proper massage in!

Greenstone · 17/04/2014 11:37

She will grow out of it yep. They really do get cold the second they're out of the bath (I learned this the hard way) so straight into a warm towel, dressed and fed is the quickest way to peace. Wouldn't bother doing a massage afterwards she'll just get cold.

Gerty1002 · 17/04/2014 16:40

My DS was like this for the first three.months or so. He is now the opposite, as Uri said, crawling/screaming/rolling when we try to dress him :)

Gerty1002 · 17/04/2014 16:40

He is 7mo btw...

Blankiefan · 17/04/2014 16:43

Try giving her a shorter bath. Even if she enjoys it when she's in, the longer she is in the water, the worse the temperature difference when she comes out. Have very quick baths and increase time slowly. This worked for us and now DD is 6 months she enjoys good length baths and we enjoy playing too - without the drama after.

BertieBotts · 17/04/2014 18:27

Don't you get cold the second you step out of a bath/shower? Everyone gets that... right?! Blush

Kernow1973 · 18/04/2014 19:15

Our little one used to scream when getting her out of bath & we discovered later the lifting motion (from her being on her back on bath to upright against my body) made her sick:( we rectified by keeping her horizontal when lifting her out - problem solved.
