Green poo in newborn.

I have a 3 week old baby who is exclusively breast fed.

He has lots of wet and dirty nappies each day - in fact his wet nappies are always really heavy. His stools have always been yellowy, light brown as I'd expect. However, DH just changed the nappy and his poo was green! I did a quick google search and everything was saying that it's a sign something is wrong Shock Sad

The only difference there has been in DS's feeding is that over the last few days he's really been cluster feeding of being at the breast for up to an hour as opposed to his usual 20 minutes.

Can anyone offer any reassurance??

The occasional green poo is not a problem. If they continue and/or he seems a bit under the weather then it may be worth asking your HV/GP about it.

Could it be something you've eaten? I remember something similar and I had drunk orange juice not long before.
How is he in himself? Is the poo very smelly?
I'm sure it's nothing but if the next one is the same I'd get him checked out

It can sometimes be a sign that they're drinking too much fore milk - I seem to recall the extra lactose in this makes it a bit green?

We had it occasionally when my daughter was feeding a bit fussily, but it normally settled down by the next time

Occasional green poo is fine. As is frequent yellow poo with greeny seedy bits. If it is all grass green and frequently do then it could be many things. Oversupply causing lactose overload (block feeding solves this one - google it on kellymom), cows milk protein intolerance ( you will have to cur out all dairy including hidden bits, again kellymom website has loads of info), or a transient tummy bug.

Sometimes they just have green poo - if he is otherwise fine then it isn't a problem and there's nothing to fix. Don't panic!

My DS had the odd green poo after a cluster feeding growth spurt. After a day, it went back to normal. Keep an eye on things, but hopefully it's just a result of his change in feeding and won't last.

My Ds had green poo for 4 months from about 2 weeks old. It can be perfectly normal to have green poo. He probably had a slightly immature bowel so things just went through him a bit quickly- as long as they are happy and putting on weight then it's fine.
