Does anyone have a gap of under a year between their children?

Had our baby at the end of March, am the wrong side of 40 and therefore would like to crack on for our next one.

DH is worried it is too soon.

Had anyone else got a gap of under a year between their children?

I have a year on the dot, give or takes few days.

Philoslothy · 11/04/2014 20:00

Were you actively trying? Did you start trying straight away. I guess that you returned from your maternity leave already pregnant.

I have one year and 10 days gap. They are now 18months and 2.5 years now. even on a bad day I'm so glad I had them close. I didn't get out of 'baby mode' by the time DC2 arrived and I know had I left it longer I probably wouldn't have fine back and had DC2. Has definitely been the best age gap for us as a family.

LizzieMint · 11/04/2014 20:57

My gap's not quite so small, there's 15 months between my two eldest. It was about the first chance I had to get pg though, was monitoring for ovulation (no periods) and fell pregnant immediately. I went back to work 6 months pregnant and just worked on a discrete project for 3 months - I had told work after 12 week scan.
It was very hard work but it really pays off when they get older, they are so close. Smile

Thanks.

Maybe wait until the oldest is 9 months or so and then you will have an 18 month gap. I have a 19 month gap between my two (for the same reason, I had to get on with it) and now they are 14 months and almost 3 years I love it and am so glad I had them so close. Just be prepared to write off the next couple of years, it is really hard work being pregnant with a 1 year old and really really hard work having a baby and an 18month- 2 year old but after you get past the second ones first year it is plain sailing. Good luck:-).

This is baby number five so I have quite a good idea of how much work they are. These may be my famous last works but I don't find babies that hard. I have had a toddler and a baby before. I had eighteen months between ds1 and dd2. There is then almost three years between dd2 and dd1. There is then a big gap between dd2 and ds2.

Sorry an losing count of my own children ! I have just had baby number five, just over five years after ds2. New baby would be number six!

I have 11 months and 6 days between dd1 and ds3 and it's great. Very very hard work up until they started school but they both went into Reception in September and it's so quiet now! They are lovely friends and I'm glad (now) they are so close.

They aren't my first though so I already had experience at juggling dc plus baby.

Good luck!

BobTheFly · 12/04/2014 12:37

X post! I see they arent your first either.

RandomMess · 12/04/2014 12:38

I have a 14 month gap, was planned but didn't expect it to happen instantly. Stopped Ebf at 4 months, bleed horrifically for a few weeks and then fell pregnant.

It really was fine. The only horrific thing was severe SPD, heatwave summer (2003), and then baby had undiagnosed reflux and screamed contstantly for 6 months - I don't think that would have been anymore bearable regardless of age gap.

RandomMess · 12/04/2014 12:39

It is a big demand on your body tbh - that is the downside IMHO

Philoslothy · 12/04/2014 12:42

It is a big demand and post 40 I found this last pregnancy quite hard. I was utterly exhausted. Raising the child does not phase me, carrying another child makes me gulp a bit. I just think that the longer I leave it, the harder it will be .

Also feeling sad because I know the next child will be the last one.

my dsis had dc3 7 months after DC2. One in May, one in Dec. fell almost immediately after having DC. Obv. the December baby was VERY premature (26-7 weeks) and very very poorly. Still has major problems. Please give your body time to recover from one pregnancy before you embark on the next one.

Philoslothy · 12/04/2014 12:52

I will discuss with my midwife how long my body needs to recover.

12 months exactly between ds2 and dd2. They are really good friends now they are 6 and 7 and the plus side all nappies and sterilising bottles ect was done practically the same time.

RandomMess · 12/04/2014 13:07

It takes you 9 months to grow a baby, probably 9 months minimum to recover!

Philoslothy · 12/04/2014 13:10

Maybe this is my hormones making me want to get pregnant again straight away. Thanks for the advice.

RandomMess · 12/04/2014 13:36

It probably is, I was always broody when they were little. I agreed once dc4 had been born safely I wouldn't ask for anymore because he had more than enough dc. I also think having 3 in 3 years kept me very busy and helped me be more rational about stopping!

It is also the huge gap between the youngest and oldest that bothers me, eventually it is hard to find things to do as a family that the older ones genuinely enjoy Sad

Philoslothy · 12/04/2014 13:59

Our children currently range from being newborn to being at university so age gaps have to just be accepted here!

moanymiserablemum · 12/04/2014 14:13

I'm in exactly the same position op. Mine range from 24 to 9 weeks...I'm running out of time so need to decide quickly.

None of mine are that close. Smallest age gap was 2.5 yrs between dc1 & dc. Largest gap almost 10 yrs!

Will watch this thread with interest...

moanymiserablemum · 12/04/2014 14:19

Oh & the recovery issue. It's very individual. I would say I am totally back to normal physically my 10/12 weeks after delivery.

I was my pre pregnancy weight by week2.

I know that's not very normal.
