Pocket money

Does pocket money have to be a regular amount at regular intervals? Is there anything wrong with being a bit random with it?

It is your money, it is completely up to you.

However, the whole point of pocket money is to help children appreciate the value of money and to live within their means. I know a lot of people in life live off irregularly timed wages, but I would imagine the vast majority get paid once a week / month. Therefore, getting money at regular intervals is part of learning about it.

In my opinion.

IME the main point of pocket money is to stop the whinging for more stuff, by letting you say "do you have enough money? No? Oh well, you'll have to save another week". If you give it randomly, you'll just get whinging for more of it.

You could always do my dad's solution where pocket money was every Saturday, but if I didn't remind him on the day and it didn't happen, that was my fault...

I'm absolutely useless at remembering to give it on the day. And when I am prepared and make sure that I have the right change, it always somehow disappears into a parking meter or charity bucket!

That is why my eldest gets pocket money as a monthly bank transfer. But the younger ones still need to see the physical dosh to really understand what they have.

We do weekly charts and pocket money but they don't get the actual money, we just add it up and when they want something we get it and take it off thier money. As they get older we will probably give them the actual money but while they are little they just like knowing how much they have saved up.

I give my DS pocket money - he is 8.

He has to work for it though - jobs around the house - doing the dark washing, setting and clearing the table and changing his bedding etc.

He generally saves it all and buys new football kits. He has just changed some over into dollars, so he can buy some treats on holiday and get his Dad a present. He also bought me an Easter egg today, which I thought was lovely.

He gets a small increase on birthdays, but has to also do a few more jobs around the house.
