8 week old baby nap times

My DS will be 8 weeks on Saturday. I have noticed that he can generally only be awake for an hour and a half at a time before he gets tired and very cranky. He can go from happy to crying in a second so it's hard to catch him before he goes into a tiredness meltdown. I try to calm him down before putting him in his cot but it doesn't seem to work and he scratches at my chest and face etc and seems very agitated by my gentle efforts to settle him down. The only thing that seems to work is just putting him down in his cot where he cries for about 10 mins then falls asleep! Is this ok? I'm a first time mum and i have no idea whether this is the right thing to do!

Any advice is much appreciated!

Thanks.

My dd was the same, my efforts to soothe her made her more agitated and daytime naps were often only in the car or pushchair.
My NCT course leader reassured me a little whining cry is normal - it's the only way they can communicate their feelings and at the beginning all the cries sound the same. You should start to be able to distinguish between a whinging cry and when they are distressed after a while

You are doing fine Brew

You're lucky! My nearly 8 week old will only nap in my or DP's arms or next to me and point blank refuses his crib. He will last about 10 mins max in there before screaming the house down. You sound like you've got naps sorted.

Thank you for your replies - i'm glad that it's normal for a whining cry to occur!

I'm not sure we have nap times completely sorted but one thing that i'm sure has helped is the blackout blind in the room and i try to put him in the same place for most of his naps unless we're out and about.

Thanks for the reassurance re the crying!
