Moisturiser for 18 mo ??

Hi all,

DS is 18 mo and had a very bad case of eczema when he was a baby. We started using Aveeno cream when he had eczema and found that it helped a lot. Now his eczema is all cured, but we have continued using Aveeno as an occassional moisturiser after baths...

But recently I have noticed that his skin looks dry. We bathe him on alternate days and only with plain water - use an Aveeno shampoo just for his hair twice a week...

Is there any moisturiser you would recommend? Do you apply any oils or lotions to your DCs after a bath?
Any advice on treating dry skin would be very helpful...

TIA :)

I'd reduce the bathing to once a week and if he's still dry use a single ingredient oil (eg olive) to massage him with.

If you still have a prescripton for aveeno cream, I'd just start using that twice a day until it's nice and soft again, and then maybe experiment with once a day.

DS1 is 4, we're on aveeno twice a day, but if we ever slip a day or two his excema shows up again (even though his skin looks nice and soft).

I like the weleda calendula one. It's on offer at waitrose atm.

I second Weleda, it is lovely stuff. We use the face cream on our DD's.

Ds 10mo this has eczema he is bathed 2/3 times a week at the most and we use cetraben on him daily to keep skin moisturised.

I'd keep going with the aveeno if you know it suits him.

We use aveeno on 11m DD every night as part of bedtime routine. She has this on whether or not she has a bath, but if she bathes, she has to have the aveeno bath and shower oil sloshed in. Plain water in the bath is just too drying.

We get both the moisturising cream and bath oil on prescription.

Oh and I tend to just wash DD's hair with the oiled bath water mostly, just shampooing once a week. It still looks lovely after the oil bath wash, not greasy.

The Aveeno Baby Eczema cream (only available in the UK on Amazon I think) is the only thing that works on DD.

Another vote for cetraben here
And dermol emollient is good too in the bath and also acts as a soap substitute
Also the current advice is to bath daily with eczema (with an emollient in the water) as it keeps the skin clean and reduces the risk of bacterial infection in any cracks/sores. It also prepares the skin for the moisturizing cream.

My amazing top tip for dry excema prone skin is aqueous calamine cream. It's about £3.50 in superdrug and is fantastic. My DD had horrendous skin and this applied religiously 3 times a day for a month cleared it right up. After that, input it on the bad patches once or twice a day depending on how it looks.

It is dirt cheap so I recommend you give it a try.

Also the eucerin ato lotion bath additive is fab for the bath. It is expensive but vv good

Coconut oil is very good as a natural emollient. I also like aquamax cream and doublebase dayleve cream, both of which are SLS and paraben free.

Ds (18mo) had severe ezcema last year which is now quite well-controlled by use of the following:
-Only bathing alternate days
-Oilatum moisturiser every morning
-Epaderm ointment (a lard type substance) after bathing in the evening

LovelyWeatherForDucks · 11/04/2014 09:12

DS has had quite dry skin lately - much better now with alternate bath days (bubbles occasionally but rinsed off in plain water) and e45 baby lotion.

DeathMetalMum · 11/04/2014 09:18

Maybe try something like aveeno bath oil in the bath. We have it for dd with eczema. For dry skin you could try anytying from normal e45, diprobase, cetraben. I find after around 6-12 months whatever cream we are using on dd as a moituriser start to become less effective.

Thanks for your replies ! :)
Since Aveeno suits him I'll apply it more often and see if that helps. If not, I'll have to try something else...
