Too early to learn shapes?

My daughter is 18months old, almost 19 months, she is very clever and is brilliant with her colours I was going to start introducing some shapes.... I can't decide if this is maybe too early or not, does 18/19 months seem too young?

Don't make a big deal about it. My dd (now 21 mo) has recognised circles, triangles, stars and hearts since she was 17mo, but it just came up in conversation. When reading books, for example, I always talk about what we can see in the pictures. She's pretty hot on shapes and numbers, not so hot on colours. Some of her friends are the other way.

I don't think it's ever "too young" to start talking about these things, but you don't need to sit down and "teach" them. Just talk - they're curious and will learn.

Not at all. Just do it in a fun way. Read books, play with toys, draw pictures.

My DS is now 2 and knows colours, shapes and his numbers, at 18 months he was just starting to learn these things. You don't have to formally teach, just do it as part of playing.

Mine have recognised shapes for a long time, I didn't teach them though it just happened. They're still a bit shite at numbers though.

Not numbers colours!

My DD is 17mo and brilliant at shapes. Can do shape sorters and point to different shapes. Hasn't got a clue about colours or numbers though - just talk to her about them she'll learn if you read and play with toys.

Mine has know his shapes for a while now. He wasn't taught. Just picked them up from reading.

It's never too young to learn anything as long as it's fun. It's much easier for kids to learn from constant exposure and having everything pointed out to them when they're young and interested in everything than to be taught later on as if it were work to be endured.

Not too young at all, my little girl knew most by two now she knows what a trapezium is at nearly three.

I talk to DD about shapes and colours - she's not 8mo yet, so clearly doesn't have a clue what I'm talking about and mainly just likes eating her toys. I figure it can't do any harm though and hope she'll pick up these things more easily if they're part of her environment. No idea if I'm right though :)
