So we are on day three without a poo, day two of struggling :( he is in a fair amount of distress and clearly very uncomfortable!! Have given him laxative last night and this morning along with ibuprofen. He has an infection in the tip of his penis which is making him resist pushing :( anything else I can try??? Any tips greatly appreciated

Cycling his legs, letting him round around to exercise the bowels. Lots of fluids. Don't let him strain, maybe distract him when he's on the toilet by talking to him?

Pears. Water. A warm bath.

Pineapple, pears, prunes and peas! I read somewhere that if it begins with a P it's good for helping kids to poo. Maybe try giving him some of those fruit/ veg pouches if he won't eat the veg. The ' Mangoes, mangoes, mangoes' one from Ella's Kitchen works wonders on my 16 month old.

What laxative are you using? Movicol is good but not available without a prescription for children IIRC.

If he's very bunged up and in a lot of pain you may have to use a glycerin suppository. He won't like it, but they work very quickly and move the immediate blockage, making it easier for the backlog to shift.

Im sure I read on here that a doctor once recommend a vigorous wipe around the anus with a really soapy flannel.

It sounds weird and gross and I've never done it so can't vouch for it.

Not such a helpful post maybe?

Thanks for the help! Have been supplying him with pineapple juice, pears, orange juice, melon and water all day long and this afternoon he has passed two pretty small pellet like poos :( but at least its something! The strain on his face was unbearable though!!!

Will keep up the laxative and etc but out of interest how long do you leave it before you head to the doctor???

He's got lactulose, was given it on prescription a short while ago for a stomach upset top try and clear it. This time he's actually constipated and it is terrible :( I feel awful when I can't help

I second the glycerin suppository. Was the only thing that worked for us and it works quickly.
Get one person to hold them with their head on your shoulder and a 2 nd person can do the suppository quickly whilst they are not looking !

A good run made the difference for ds aged 3. No poo for 3 days then a quick run and it really did make all the difference. It sounds too easy but I was about to head to doctors. Warm bath too. Lots of water to drink. Good luck.

If hes had it for a while it does sound like im being a bit daft with my advice but ds has a tendency to get constipation unless I exercise him every day. I was at the stage of getting doctors involved as he was straining with pellet poos but found taking him for exercise worked. I hope he gets sorted.

I third the glycerin suppository, not nice at all but after 4 days it might be the only thing that can clear the blockage.

Prunes or castor oil.

Gripe water always works for my dd, or fresh orange juice. I put sudacrem on her bum too so that it doesn't hurt so much when she does poo.

With dd it tends to happen with a change of diet / milk.
Keeping them well hydrated is always helpful.

When to take them to the doctor? Things sound pretty bad already so I'd take him to the doctor tomorrow if I were you.

You want to avoid him getting an anal fissure (a small tear) which is hideously painful and can lead to months of withholding poo (and therefore more constipation) for fear it's always going to hurt. That's one vicious cycle you don't want him to be in.
