Does anyone know how to find out how much a pc cost in the year 2000?

My googling has been an abject failure. Can anyone help?

ours was around £800-£1000 IIRC.

SaintGeorgeMarple · 19/08/2006 23:28

I paid £799 in 2001 and the prices were coming down so I would agree with misdee for 2000.

ScummyMummy · 19/08/2006 23:29

Thanks misdee. I would like a reference to some "official" statistics if possible as I want to "prove" that the cost has come right down.

Scummy, theres no comparison between PCs in 2000 and todays PCs though, because you are getting so much more with your PC today.
More memory, faster processing, flat screen maybe, different communication methods (USB), DVD slot, PCMCIA slot, even built in mobile internet.

Are you comparing laptops or just desktops? Laptops have developed even faster.

If you cant get enough info here, you might try dropping the question to someone at The Register Those guys know everything about computers. They also probably carry archives of their PC reviews?

ScummyMummy · 19/08/2006 23:57

Hiya, ffb. I'm basically trying to show that many more people have home computers these days, and am arguing that this is partly because they are more affordable. Want some figures to back this up. Have some good research that shows that in 2000 only a third of the uk population had a computer. Current figure is 63% apparently. High st shops have desktops for under £300 atm. So want to know how much they would have been in 2000 to back up my position.

fistfullofbanners · 20/08/2006 00:02

mm. not sure what the cheapest pc would have been in 2000, but must have been over 500 pounds I think. We couldnt afford one, anyway

Thats a difficult case to prove because in 2000, far fewer people were clued up to the internet, and lets face it, who does use their PC to organise their recipes?

fistfullofbanners · 20/08/2006 00:26

You might want to consider comparing the prices of computer components, rather than the end product. For example this site charts the reduction in cost of hard drives. this is normally the sort of figures that are quoted in the industry.

In this case, prices in USD should be applicable because its an international market.

SparklyGothKat · 20/08/2006 00:50

I paid £700 in 2001.

ScummyMummy · 20/08/2006 09:29

Thank you Sparkly and fistful. I really need to know how much it cost for an average non expert computer buyer to walk into a shop and buy the cheapest ready to use out of the box computer, fistful. I know computers have developed a lot since 2000 but even then 1/3rd of the population was online! I was myself - and mumsnet started in around 2000, didn't it?

OP posts:
fistfullofbanners · 20/08/2006 11:12

That's a difficult statistic to find then. Newspaper archives, maybe, with adverts from PC World? I suggested the price of hard drives, because this is an approximate reflection of the price of computers.

I was MN'ing in 2000, but from my work pc!

fistfullofbanners · 20/08/2006 11:17

Or how about asking one of the computer manufacturers, for example Evesham, what their cheapest computer was in 2000?

ScummyMummy · 20/08/2006 11:19

I have moved on now- decided I was obssessing too much and just needed to get on with my work. Have terrible tendency not to see wood for trees. Will use a guesstimate of 800-1000 as misdee suggested oringinally I think! Really appreciate everyone's help- esp you, fistfullofbanners. Thank you.

dh bought a Dell XPST600 440BX P111 Mini Tower and all the other stuff (incl windows 98, Macafee and MS works 99) from Dell in Jan 2000.

It cost £980 ( just found the receipt)

iota · 20/08/2006 11:38

sh!t - thath's the net cost
plus £49 delivery
VAT £180

Total cost £1209.08

ScummyMummy · 20/08/2006 11:40

Thankyou iota Will use that figure. Was that a mid range computer for the time, d'you reckon?

OP posts:
iota · 20/08/2006 11:42

dunno Scummy, dh works in IT so would not buy cheapo stuff, so mid range to top end I would guess

ScummyMummy · 20/08/2006 11:43

Ace. Thank you.

OP posts:
iota · 20/08/2006 11:46

stuff also includes
internal CD rom
3.5" floppy drive

Harmon Kardon 195 speakers
Diamond viper TNT 32MB ultra vid
UK slimline Keyboard
TCO95 17" SVGA VS Mon
V90 PCI modem

ScummyMummy · 20/08/2006 11:51

Can't make much of it! Have decided that I will just say "The price of computers has fallen dramatically since 2000 with new internet ready PCs now available in the high street for under £300."

OP posts:
southeastastra · 20/08/2006 12:20

they were about £800 (for a decent one) although i got a lovely second hand mac se for £50 in 1995 (not internet ready though) haha
