CLOTH NAPPIES- ANOTHER VIRGIN NEEDING ADVICE!!

Sorry for the essay!!
I have decided to do the switch from disposable nappies to re-usable ones. I have a 3 1/2 year old boy who wets so heavily at night that his pull up explodes. I have an 11 month old daughter and no 3 on the way beginning nov. Really must switch as cost is too high and quite embarassed by no of nappies in rubbish.
HAve researched thoroghly and still undecided. Lady in area who sells nappies suggested bambino mio, bamboozle or sandys. Have had one of each to trial (which isn't nearly enough). So far:
1- Bamboozle is nice. Takes forever to dry. Always seems to feel a bit damp when I know should be dry. Doesn't seem to be absorbant at night as dd wakes up wet clothes and grobag
2- Sandys is great. Not as long to dry. dd dry in morning. Most expensive option I think as I have small babies (6lbs 8oz) and would need to buy xs.
3- Bambino mio seems to be the slimmest fitting one and most absorbant but dh doesn't like them as he thinks they are pre-historic.
4- Son won't wear any of these at night. Likes pull ups

I would like a nappy that is slim fitting and absorbant. Really liked bamboozle but don't understand why wet at night- probably need to boost (but haven't got any to try) or perhaps need to try different wraps (tots bot wrap used). ALso the extent of wetness of this and Sandys makes me think thaT it can't be comfortable for baby. Bambino mio didn't seem as wet. CAN ANYONE OFFER SOME ADVICE WHICH WILL HELP ME CHOOSE AS I AM AM STARTING TO FEEL FUZZY. ALSO WOULD LIKE TO KNOW OF GOOD PULL UP ALTERNATIVE FOR DS.

THANKS FOR READING THIS HUGE ESSAY!!!

Also- i assume you have bams, are they that much better than tots and rainbow??- i am thinking these might be better options in terms of drying

Hi this is the first time I have done anything like this so soz if I'm rubbish.

I decided before my son was born that I wanted to use reusable nappies and had the same problems as you. But chose Bambino Mio in the end because thay were so simple, not layers and layers of fabric and stuff to faff with and because like you said they were slim fitting. We had no probs.

hope that helps.

Flamesparrow · 21/08/2006 18:58

I prefer the WBBs because they are slimmer, but also a bigger fit somehow (longer tabs and front, and a slightly wider bum) so they are a much better birth to potty version.

Drying order goes (fast to slow) - Fluffle, Rainbow, Normal, Bamboo. But the slimness of the bamboo plus the absorbancy makes me put up with the long drying time.

Yes, you've misunderstood, makesachange. You are advertising your site everytime you "give nappy advice" and mumsnet charge for advertising. email MN HQ and they'll explain. Otherwise your posts may well be removed as they are effectively free advertising for your site. Or, if you just want to give advice, remove your web address from your posts and don't keep linking to it

This is all typed in a friendly tone of voice by the way

laundrylover · 21/08/2006 21:52

Are Wam Bam Boo's made in the UK ladies?
Agree about the free advertising but just to point out to Loopylou that I only do free advise so please do proofread that printout that I emailled for me . I already have my own successful business and nappies are just an obsessive hobby with no income attached!

tassis · 21/08/2006 21:57

what a shame that all of makesachanges posts have been deleted and not just the "advert bit" at the bottom as she posted something interesting last night about bamboozles not wroking with nippas and totsbots offering to add aplix free of charge...

or I think that's what i read? was it? I was going to tell a couple of friends...

laundrylover · 21/08/2006 22:37

Why not email her on the website?

loopylou49 · 21/08/2006 22:50

LL- Got your e-mail Will proof read tomorrow when dd is asleep and ds watching cbeebies. RE makesachange, it is a shame she didn't get the hint because I thought her advise was good if not a little directed to her website. Tassis- I e-mailed her website for advise and she replied so you could always give it a go.

I think that HQ had already had a chat (I got all excited about pressing the little (!) button a while ago to see if they could - I hoped that just a quick mention of "this is how we do things" would fix it, but it seems to have not

re Tots Bots and nippas - yes, they are stitching aplix on them. There should be something on here but if there isn't anything obvious, just do the "contact us". I've not had any issues with it with the WBBs, but then I didn't with the tots either.

joj72 · 22/08/2006 14:07

Hi there.
I use Mother ease nappies through the day with my little boy. And Tots Bots at night. The TB nappies are very thick and I have never had a problem with leaking. I know it is a mine field of info out there.

viticella · 22/08/2006 16:11

I have been very happy with my Motherease one size stay dry - have an 11mth old and 28mth old both in nappies. They may not be the slimmest but nearly everything fits over them, children are skinny to start with! The advantage is that the same set of nappies fits both children birth to potty so you are never stuck with the wrong size clean/in your changing bag.

Also I used my local council's nappy trial/cashback scheme and got a total of £90 cashback, so the whole set-up for 2 children (24 nappies and 8 covers) cost about £160.

I use Nature Baby disposables at night I'm afraid, as they usually poo on waking, but that's only 14 nappies a week.

I was sceptical but the whole thing has worked out cheaper and easier than I expected.

joj72 · 22/08/2006 16:35

I would have to agree with viticella. I love the motherease one size to. I actually prefer the 'BIG BUM' look of them. These very rarely leak and one size carries you through to potty. All you need to buy are new covers.
Our council didn't offer the money back, so our set up cost about £200, this was the nappies, liners and bag.
Ebay can be good, but make sure you don't pay over the top.

MrsWaggsnapps · 22/08/2006 16:54

I read that TBs had an issue with a small percentage of their bamboozles and had sourced a different cloth since then. My bamboozles wouldn't nippa (they are aplix but I tried yesterday as I got my WB back from a friend and wanted to see how they compared). Having said that they have had over 6 mths of wear and the WB only 2 mths and I probably tumble dry them too much (my washer drier doesn't do different temps, just Cotton or Synthetic).

I must admit I now prefer hemp as it seems a more reliable fabric - I can imagine handing down my hemp nappies to my grandchildren (assuming...)

loopylou49 · 22/08/2006 18:52

Hi Joj and vit,

I am currently trying the motherease one size alongside the tots bots. I must say that I like both and they both seem to be doing the job just fine. I think I prefer the tots bots above MEO as they just feel like they are more absorbant and the poppers on the MEO are a bit of a pain to do with a wriggly 11 month old. Also I find it a bit hard to get the exact fit I want. Saying that though they have dealt well with poos and no leakage. I can't decide which between the two is the slimmest fitting, though.

Have also tried nature babies stuffables and am not too keen on them- have had a couple of leaks.

My council doesn't offer any cash incentive- they only offer 6 nappies to trial for 1 month for free- which isn't much of an incentive. It is a shame really as I have 2 I would be fully putting in nappies and it is going to cost me a fortune!! I have been looking for second hands but sometimes they are not that much cheaper.

Still haven't decided what I will end up using but I have 2 weeks to decide so any input good!!

loopylou49 · 22/08/2006 18:54

Also have decided that I am not that keen on ME airflow wrap as leaves red marks around legs

OP posts:
Flamesparrow · 22/08/2006 20:27

I had no issues with airflow for DD, but they leave the marks on DS - now a full wool & fleece convert and am much happier.

laundrylover · 22/08/2006 22:14

Lou thanks for reading my document - it made me laugh as part of my job is to proofread and edit stuff and I felt like a client!! Thanks for adding those web links too.
I have a question about trials tho as I have never done this - if you are wanting nappies for your first baby then how does a trial pack work?? This sounds stupid but it would seem to me that you have to have decided before the sproglet arrives.
By the way, DP making grumbles as I hinted that I may have to buy some Wam Bams in the name of research...

laundrylover · 22/08/2006 22:16

Oh and Flame, now that I have you cornered a word about fleece wraps! Do you use them during the day/why do you love'em and would they work over prefolds??? Ta.

Flamesparrow · 23/08/2006 08:26

Hmmm... not too sure about prefolds as they are better that bit loose for the air to circulate/dampness evaporate etc. Daytime - yes, I do use them, but now that DS is needing clothes more (been in just wrap and t-shirt most of the summer) I am needing more frequent nappy changes or the pressure of his jeans etc is making them slightly damp. I think that that will get better as he moves more though?

Dunno if that helped at all?? For fleece but not, the wacky wraps are great - they have a breathable waterproof bit (kind of like PUL), so you get the softness of fleece on the bindings, but not the squishy issues iyswim.

loopylou49 · 23/08/2006 12:54

Hi LL
Different companies work diff ways. I went to babykind with a list of nappies I wanted to try and they have set up a pack for me which arrives Friday!!! that I get to use for 2 weeks and then return. It has cost me £20 but better than going into a big purchase blind or buying a few diff that I don't like etc.
If you do not have your baby yet, then I think what I have read (and I think they tailor it to what you want)is that they send you a pack for when your baby is due with what nappies you want to try/ they suggest. Nappy Lady and babykind do this but I haven't really looked into the details as my decision for unborn will depend on choice for dd.

Feel quite embarassed now that I have learned that your job is to proof read

OP posts:
loopylou49 · 23/08/2006 12:59

Also- have just received some fleece liners through post from ebay- not sure if I like the idea of them next to dd bum?!?!

OP posts:
loopylou49 · 23/08/2006 12:59

What are wacky wraps??

OP posts:
Flamesparrow · 23/08/2006 13:04

loopylou49 · 23/08/2006 13:20

they are cute. am going to have to stop looking at all of these links. dh is getting a bit worried about me

OP posts:
laundrylover · 23/08/2006 13:37

OMG Flame - why did you post that link?????? I'm in love and now want another baby just to justfy buying new wraps!
Lou, don't worry about the proofing - my clients always send me stuff saying 'not edited yet so just comment on content' but all I can see are the typos and grammar and I struggle not to correct. I liked being the client for a change!!Thanks for feedback on trial packs. Sis's SIL coming tomorrow for nappy advice and she is a solicitor so has mega bucks to spend!! Sure I can help her eh?
