My dd had it mildly - only brought up one or two feeds a day. She would just bring up a lot of milk. People would be shicked by how much. No crying or anything though. Have you taken the db to a doc or hv?

gem1984 · 15/08/2006 23:39

no not as of yet didnt want to seem like i was being silly.

Ds had it from day 2 in hospital, changed him 3 times in the night as was so sick made all of his clothes wet. I thought it was normal... whenever we went out I had to bring at least two full changes of clothing with us. He put on weight but was constantly being sick, but because he put on weight the Doctors were not worried. He did have constant tummy ache though, I tried every king of colic drop and in the end did Cranial Osteopathy, the only thing that helped was when an old doctor (was about 85) said "yep seen this lots of times before, you need to give the lad solids". I was holding back for the required 6 months recommended etc, but in the end gave him some rice/rusk at 4 months and it started getting better. Didnt fully go until he was almost a year old tho.

A friend of mine persued it a bit more and her poor lad has had tubes stuck down his throat and Bararium (sp?) meals, so my advice would be if he is putting on weight, try to hold back from giving him medical intervention as his tummy wont fully mature for a while.

go see your gp, my dd had reflux and it was awful, feeding her became a nightmare and we could never feed her in our arms as she used to arch her back, she was prescribed infant gaviscon (doesn't work for everyone tho) once we used it we noticed a big improvement

mummyplonk · 16/08/2006 22:47

Theladyvanishes is right that some babies do respond to "Infant Gaviscon " and "SMA staydown" and my friend swears by "Colief", I am afraid it is just trial and error.

CountTo10 · 16/08/2006 22:56

My lo had reflux from about 2 weeks but my hv assured me he didn't have it and I tried infacol and colief which didn't work. As he wasn't bringing up buckets of milk and put on weight she kept telling me it was all ok. In the end I took him to the docs when he was 12 weeks and she immediately agreed that it was reflux and prescribed infant gaviscon which worked to an extent. Other syptoms he had was a slight umbilical hernia and it really affected his bowel habits bless his heart. A friend of mine recently had the same with her lo and now uses a specific formula prescribed by her doc. If you aren't sure then I'd take your lo down to the docs to have a chat and get them checked out. Ultimatley it disappears as they replace milk with solids and their tummy matures.

gem1984 · 16/08/2006 23:24

took my ds to the docs today and they have said it is reflux and hav given him gaviscon. tried it with his feed just b4 he went to bed so hopefully he will be ok now. fingers crossed. many thanks 4 all ur advice.

gem1984 · 16/08/2006 23:27

oh but one thing they also said is that i was overfeeding him and to maybe giv him less milk. i didnt think i was giving him that much. he only has 6 - 7 oz depending on how hungry he is ever 3-1/2 hrs ish but with a 7 - 8 hr sleep at night...... do u think this is overfeeding?

Hi, my youngest is three now.
When she was tiny she would projectile vomit after EVERY feed, YUK!!

We tried infacol, but that made her worse.

We were given baby gaviscon, but that didn't help.

Tried changing her milk. Made her worse still.

Then my lovely health visitor heard about a new baby milk called SMA STAYDOWN it comes in a tin and has a purple lid.

Made a huge difference.

We also had to keep her upright for upto an hour after each feed.
It was hard work as i had two other children who also wanted my attention.

Little one usually ended up being propped up against a pillow on the sofa so i could keep an eye on her.

The milk is made of a thicker substance than normal baby milk, so when you mix it with water, you gently shake it as too much shaking will thicken it too much.

As she was a big baby 9lb 5oz she was ready for solids by 15 weeks and although reflux didn't go completely it was a lot better once on solids.

I also found that smaller, more regular feeds worked better.
She could only take 4-5oz at a time, any more than that and even the staydown came up!!!

Hope all my rambling helps!

gem1984 · 17/08/2006 01:16

thanks for the tip. can u buy this from anywhere or is it only in special shops?

OP posts:
fussymummy · 17/08/2006 01:26

Some larger branches of Boots will stock it, but i always found local smaller chemists would order it in for me.
Good stuff, and if i remember correctly it was only about 75p dearer than other milk.

Keep in touch and let me know how you get on.

By the way, if you've been prescribed baby gaviscon, don't use it with this milk as poor baby will never get it through the teat!!

gem1984 · 17/08/2006 01:27

oh ok cheers. i'll let u know.

nappyaddict · 17/08/2006 02:27

we use the cow and gate comfort milk and that has worked wonders along with using omeprazole

youknowwhat · 17/08/2006 09:14

gem1984, the reason your GP recommended smaller feeds is not because you are overfeeding him.
Milk acts as an antiacid someif you give a baby small feeds more often, he will feel more confortable as the fluis in is stomach will be less acid. I did something similar instinctively when I had hearburn when I was pregnant. Usually, the advice is 'half a feed twice often'.
Other things you can do are :
Prop the bed of your child at an angle so that he is not lying flat.
Make him sleep on his left hand side (but you will need to baance the risks with cot death syndrom)
Good luck

mummyplonk · 17/08/2006 12:27

Gem1984, I have just checked my larder and I have two sealed tins of the SMA Staydown as I tried it too and had to order it in.

If you live or have and friends in the Wiltshire area you are welcome to them (was going to sell them on E-bay but the postage is too much)

oldfloss · 17/08/2006 18:48

Hi, this is my first visit to mumsnet so I hope this message appears ok.
My now seven year old had terrible reflux from day one. There were a few occasions where whole bottles would be thrown up but mostly it was a constant dribble of sick, really heavy on the washing machine. It was like a full cup of tea that was just spilling over the edges.
Lots of visits to the Doc but like previous contributions, as he was putting on weight they were not concerned. Used to drive me mental though so eventually Doc prescribed something that could be added to hi milk- wish I could remember the name of it but I remember it made the milk have the consistency of semolina. Obviously it made the milk heavier to keep down and it worked a treat.
Also- all health professionals told me that it would only last until he was one year old and was standing upright more than sitting and crawling (and therefore his stomach not being compressed in any way) I was dubious but they were totally right, almost to the day!!
Hope this helps- I am talking seven years ago but maybe the 'stuff' is still being prescribed??

gem1984 · 17/08/2006 21:19

dreamteamgirl · 17/08/2006 22:09

Hi Gem

One reason reflux babies overeat a bit is cos sucking relieves the acid. As long as the are sucking they are swallowing, which stops the acid regurgitating. Dummies can help with this too. Also cos if they puke, they need to replace that food.

You CAN change milk straight over, but ask your GP, as you can get staydown on prescription I think

fussymummy · 18/08/2006 13:11

Hi Gem, no need to introduce milk gradually, just change over completely.
One other thing you might need to do though is change the size of teat you're using.
Be guided by your little one, you don't want to drown them in milk!!!!
It should work well for you.
IF YOU STILL HAVE WORRIES CALL YOUR HEALTH VISITOR OR GP AND THEY'LL GIVE ADVICE.

TheLadyVanishes · 18/08/2006 14:20

gem my dd was on gaviscon for months, we stopped when she reached 9mths (they do outgrow reflux) my gp reassured me that gaviscon has no affects on them so don't worry about using it especially if you have seen improvement.

Elsie123 · 10/09/2006 13:29

Hello

Can anyone help? - you all seem to have experience with infacol and gaviscon. Is it ok to use both together?

bonkerz · 10/09/2006 13:42

DD was diagnosed with reflux after a horrid 4 weeks of trying everything to help her with her posseting and pain.
We tried gaviscon which worked lovely for about a week. You can you infacol too but to be honest if it is reflux then infacol wont help. We also tried colief which was ok but eventually doctor put her on ENFAMIL which is available on prescription and is specifically designed for reflux! Since she has been on this she has been fine!!! Ask the GP about it.
