He obviously has a belly ache because he keeps crying....do I put a nappy on so that he can do a poo?

WOn't he just do one first thing in the morning in his nappy? That's usually what ds2 does if we haven't managed to get him to 'perform' during the day...

JonesTheSteam · 15/08/2006 19:36

If he's upset and obviously in pain, I'd put a nappy on him and perhaps let him sit on the potty or toilet to go, but I'm no expert.

Perhaps someone with more knowledge will come along in a minute!

LadyTophamHatt · 15/08/2006 19:38

well, he didn't do one yesterday morning or today so I'm not sure...it'll be 4 days tomorrow with only 1 poo!

that can't feel nice on his belly.

The weeing in the potty if going brilliantly, I'm just abit concerned about his lack of poo especially as he does get constipation sometimes anyway.

come on girls...help me out here.....pleeeaasssee!!

He'll be having a nappy on soon for bed so maybe he'll do one then but what about tomorrow? I don't want to make pooing in the potty a difficult thing for him....

Sorry - I'm not much help as my ds's never get constipated. The only things I can think of are plenty of fluid and fruit tomorrow. Have you used lactulose before at all? It is safe for little ones and effective, and worht thinkin about if things don't resolve soon. Main thing is to make sure his poos don't get hard and painful which will make his 'holding on' worse. Is he asking for a nappy or a poo?
i have had friends who have had similar problems and have had to use lactulose liberally to get themselves back on track....

Prune juice, so it doesn't hurt too much when he does go?

LadyTophamHatt · 15/08/2006 20:03

he does eat areasonable amount of friut but TBh his diet isn't fantastic because he's really fussy (and being the 3rd I really can't be arsed with more battles over food after the first 2 had them).

He eats sultana bran almsot every morning with keeps him regular when he isn't constipated.
The thing is he wasn't having any trouble going before he started wearing pants, but since he's been wearing them and he's done one poo (in his pants) he just hasn't done anymore.

We didn't make a big deal of the poo in pants, just an "Oh no....never mind" and chucked the pants away (I'm not scooping poo out of pants for anyone!!)so it wasn't anything that would make him worried about doing it.

ds2's problem is that he won't sit on the thing long enough to do a poo. So we are offering hard core bribery for producing any poo in the potty (a smartie!). But it comes out anyway (in night nappy or unfortunately often in pants) so I don't have the constipation worry.
Would an extended sit after breakfast tomorrow help (watching TV perhaps?)
Fingers crossed that production resumes tomorrow...

My dd can be a bit like this can go 3/4 days without going, if she seems a bit windy eg blue round the mouth i give her a couple of doeses of infracol which seems to work for her within a couple hours.

Clary · 15/08/2006 22:30

LTH a colleague of mine was telling me that his ds wouldn't pooh (for some medical reason but anyway he was holding it in) and my colleague drew him a picture of what would happen inside him if he didn't pooh...all these turds exploding inside his tummy!
A bit gross but it worked! Worth a try or a bit graphic for your DS?

LadyTophamHatt · 16/08/2006 07:35

Normal pooing has resumed this morning.

I left the nappy on while he drank his milk, rather than taking it straight off (as I always did with ds1+2) and there was a nice hefty poo in there after 10 minutes.

Nappy off now.

LadyTH ...
For some reason there have been a lot of potty training threads this week and I feel a bit like a broken record BUT
Please let him have a nappy on if he needs a poo. I didn't let DS have one and it became a HUGE problem. He would hold on for days and days (I think 6 days was his record) with the result that at the age of 6 he still has a sluggish bowel and is currently having tests as he has not been that well this year.
When DD potty trains I will not do what I did with DS .....

LadyTophamHatt · 16/08/2006 16:39

HE DID A POO ON THE POTTY !!!!

OMG, he was sooooooo pleased with himself, he wouldn't let he flush down the toilet

LTH, very pleased for you both

Sorry I did not see this thread when you were in need - we had the exact same problem and just put ds in a nappy when he wants a poo now. I expect he will get there eventually (well he can ruddy well buy his own nappies when he is about 14 if not)

elliott · 16/08/2006 20:19

That's great!
