Tomy Walkabout Digital Monitors ...

Does anyone have one of these? If so, when it's switched onto high sensitivity and about 8 feet from a sleeping baby, should you be able to hear him breathing on the parent unit? Ours doesn't pick up any sound unless he's crying and even then it tends to start and stop intermittently - maybe just cutting out for a few seconds but cutting out all the same.

Thanks

Even on our quite old one (c. 1999) we can hear the baby breathing if it's turned up.
Are you sure you haven't switched it onto 'auto' or something similar - ours has a function which only picks up the siginificant loud noises such as crying. Settings are something like on/ off/ auto...

we have one - bought it after our cheaper 'own brand' version broke after afew months.
it is fab and i wish we hadnt wasted money on the first one
a little more pricey but in my opinion worth it.....
we still use it now and ds is 19 months
me? paranoid???? nooooooooooooo!

there is a switch - hold on

popsycal · 13/03/2004 20:48

if you hold the 'baby' unit in your hand, on theleft side is a switch which reads
off
lo sensitivity
high sensitivity

make sure it isnt switched onto low as this only kicks in the monitor if the baby makes a sound above a certain level

Millie1 · 13/03/2004 21:32

Definitely on high sensitivity. Just now DH went up and listened at the door and he was shuffling and making noise but the monitor wasn't picking it up. Tomy have already sent me a new unit for the baby's room as they thought that was the problem but that was about 15 mths ago and I didn't really test it as we stopped using it for DS1 then. Maybe we'll need to invest in a new one?

tesco do them cheaper than the baby shops....

popsycal · 13/03/2004 21:35

are both monitors on the same channel???

popsycal · 13/03/2004 21:36

could there be a loose wire somewhere??

Personally I think that these monitors are cr4p, sorry to be so blunt!! But we bought a Tomy Walkabout digital one when our dd was born and I found it to be useless. Like you say it only seems to work when the baby is actually screaming and as our daughter was a fairly quiet baby I found it ineffective. I wanted to hear her breathing and keep in touch all the time, as a first time mum. I took it back to the shop and told them I didnt get on with it and they exchanged it for annother brand. Instead I got a maws 7 analogue one and it has been fantastic!! Never had a problem and can hear daughter as clear as anything, and it meant in the early days I could judge exactely what she was doing and avoid a wasted trip upstairs and the risk of waking her.

Millie1 - we had exactly this problem with the walkabout. I took ours back THREE times before I realised that's how they're sposed to be! You won't hear baby breathing; the sound doesn't register unless there's a "significant" noise, like a loud sigh or, of course, crying. You'll get used to it eventually; it's not faulty!

stace · 14/03/2004 10:25

For what its worth out their my DS is 4 years old and sadly i still use the monitor at nights. Ours does have the auto setting and will only cut in if the noise is over a certain level. Now i cant sleep unless i can hear the reassuring shuffles and snuffles of him!! how sad is that!!!

Millie1 · 14/03/2004 10:43

Thanks everyone! Popsycal - yes, they are definitely on the same channel. I even tried the other baby unit this morning but like everyone says they're obviously just supposed to be like that. Sigh. Am now off to surf net to look at others. Maybe it's a waste but I want to hear him breathing and not risk disturbing him but sticking my head round the door.

mine isnt like that,,,,,

kitty737 · 14/03/2004 10:54

I have one of those, I can hear my baby breating and someone up that must live quite near to us arguing!!! Perhaps a little too sensitive. It is the whistling that gets on my nerves.

popsycal · 14/03/2004 10:57

kitty if you open it all up, you can change the settings onto a different 'wavelength' so you don't opick up your neighbours!!!
mine is really sensitive too
maybe there is a faulty bathc kicking about
i have found this one the most sensitive of the lot
