We live in an entirely Spanish village and I'm sure he recognises a lot of Spanish, but speaks very little. Very good speech in English.

What can I do to make his transition into this spanish school as easy as possible?

Dixia,
I think the most important thing to do is prepare him for school. The language is not a big problem for a kid, they make themselves understood if they want to. I am spanish but living in enland. I have two daughters and they spent the school holidays with my family in Spain. They undestand Catalan (my mother tongue) but they not really speak, but the first time my oldest when for the summer in Spain, my mother took her to a nursery in the mornings. She was fine from the begining. What I think you should do, is speak with the school, and more important with the teacher in the nursery class and tell them about your son not speaking a lot of spanish. They will take more care with him when they need him to do something.
I hope that everything goes fine, and he enjoys his time in the nursery
