Nappies in Summer

I know It's a bit premature to worry about this but I'm starting to obsess about how we're going to manage dirty nappies in the Summer.

Essentially, our normal bin (like most people) only gets emptied fortnightly. Until now, we've only had it full of shitty nappies in Winter but what about in hotter weather... Just how rank does if get and what can I do to minimise it?

On the positive side, we're in Scotland so excessive heat shouldn't be an issue but we do get hot weather sometimes.... This is starting to freak me out... Any solutions???

*scrape! Obviously..

I like some others could never flush the poo off! We got an nappy bin (angel care) which encases nappies and its been fab; only empty it when its full and it hardly ever smells!

Yeah I remember reading that somewhere that you were supposed to take the poo out of the disposable nappies and I thought, right, file that one under "I'll pretend I don't know until someone tells me off". Oddly enough with one of my twins it would be really easy to do and with the other one really difficult as their poo has totally different consistency (on exactly the same diet, which I hope gives some comfort to those people who read that bloody Babycentre email at about 6 months that says what your baby's poo should look like on solids - neither of ours manages to produce a satisfactory one!)

I have three year old twins, so have done two summers of nappies-for-two.

I stick nappies in the kitchen bin through the day or leave them on the floor by the front door and then chuck them in the outside bin at the end of the day. They are mostly just folded in on themselves and retabbed, not put in nappy bags because it just seems like a waste of plastic to me.

Our bins are fine. Very occasionally there is a whiff of hot nappy, but mostly not. And I don't make a habit of breathing in deeply as I open the outside bin ...

I used cloth, so no smell as washed. But did use disposables on holidays etc and did tip the poo away first. I'm sure it says on packet to do this

neversleepagain · 05/03/2014 17:11

As a previous childminder I would have up to 5 children in nappies and initially had a heaving stinking bin with maggots in summer, it was foul. I had to find a solution. My solution was putting a flushable nappy liner in the nappies of children that were in disposables. That meant I could lift the whole liner and flush it down the loo. There was sometimes poo left but usually very little.

Lesson leaned when my twins came along and I we use cloth nappies.

Just to add, if you have two babies in nappies (both under two) you qualify for a bigger wheelie bin.

toomuchtooold · 06/03/2014 09:42

neversleepagain, Croydon council refused me a bigger bin despite having twins under two in nappies. I've got the medium sized (2-4 people) bin. They do allow you to put out 3 additional bags though so fine, if they want a wheelie bin piled high with 3 extra bin bags of pooey nappies to deal with, fine by me.

neversleepagain · 06/03/2014 13:07

I guess it depends on the council. Mine give a bigger bin if you have two under two in nappies/have 6 or more people registered at the address/have a family member with specific needs (they didn't say what).

BertieBotts · 06/03/2014 13:12

DS' poos were mostly soft too, I don't think they would have been solid enough to knock off, certainly not like they were when he was almost potty trained.

MinesAPintOfTea · 06/03/2014 13:20

We have a small cheap peddle bin in the bathroom that's lined with a carrier bag, and also use nappy sacks on poo nappies (don't bother on pee). That bin is emptied daily and tied firmly so the the poo nappies are double-bagged in the wheelie bin. Its not bad.

HelenHen · 06/03/2014 21:57

I'm just too shocked by the fact that people flush the poo first! This would not work with ds at all as its a sloppy mess and I can't get my head around the awkwardness of it. I fold the nappy as quickly as I can and shove it in the angelcare nappy bin! No smells!

Rhianna1980 · 06/03/2014 22:26

We had maggots all summer long and we did not have a baby yet. It was absolutely disgusting . I'm fretting about this coming summer. ConfusedConfusedConfused Fortnightly collections is really rubbish !

springbabydays · 07/03/2014 07:00

Seriously? People scrape poo off of disposable nappies? I have never heard of this. Why make life more difficult? The cat poo goes in the bin so can't see why the baby poo shouldn't too. And our dustbin has a lid so smell is not a problem.

poocatcherchampion · 07/03/2014 17:15

always scrape poo! or at least shake the worst off. cloth or disposible.
