How do you teach this? My dd1 is 4 and still ends up with skid marks. How is the best way to get her to wipe her own bottom?

Thanks.

Yes,I'd like to know aswell.I don't think ds's arms are long enough!

hairymclary · 09/08/2006 21:43

I have no idea, all I can give you is my own experience (as a child)

1.) I could never do it while sitting on the loo

2.) I could never do it front to back.

you could also try those moist toilet tissues

Ah well the skid marks are not about how she wipes but how well she wipes. She has to master how much pressure to put on the botty to remove the mess from the immediate area and where not to drag it.

Will come with age, I believe skidmarks hang about upto the age of 7/8. Nice eh!

Tenalady · 10/08/2006 21:14

my ss was taught by his mother to check with a mirror.

I was personally horrified to know this.

He was still skidding at 7 and still using a mirror! Give that a miss if you dont mind. Somat pervy about it.

If you can't touch your left ear by putting your right arm over your head, your arms aren't long enough to wipe your bottom. Allegedly. (or left arm/right ear)

asur · 10/08/2006 21:24

is that like the old 'it's impossible to lick your own elbow?' after hearing that 99% of people try it?

or is it just me who read that and tried to touch my left ear with right hand? (and I know I can reach to wipe my bottom!)

cazzybabs · 10/08/2006 22:44

I just don't ewant her to be the only child with dirty pants in sept - oh god only another 3 years of skid marks then!

soupy, I never heard that!

I did hear though that if you can't put your arm over your head and touch the opposite ear then you aren't 5 yet (I tested it on DS1 and it worked with him ) - I got that from some 3rd world charity thing, it's how they tell approximate age in cultures that don't celebrate birthdays, and I guess 5 is a good age to be able to wipe your own bottom so it makes sense.

cazzybabs · 10/08/2006 22:53

I shall try with dd tomorrow and she if she should be able to bottom wipe.

cb, they can go on having skidmarks for ages after 4 - it gets better gradually but even adults get them sometimes

Ah, well, you may find that she either goes in the morning or hangs on desperately till she gets home (or even both) - I remember my DB telling me about one of his kids charging down the road-in the door-up the stairs-into the bathroom aged about 6, mine weren't even born then so I was a bit stunned, but sure enough they did the same thing!

hana · 10/08/2006 23:10

dd1 who is nearly 5 has just stopped asking me to wipe for no2's - we use tesco version of kando wipes - she uses a couple to get clean but still ends up with a few skids every now and then - it's going to happen I think! - she does stand up though and contorts herself into position - I let her get on with it, it's just so nice not to have to wipe myself anymore!

Tenalady · 11/08/2006 12:12

omg dont tell her to hang on else she will have all sorts of problems later in life. something to do with muscles to the back passage and the bad waste sitting too long in the bowel.

My ds4.5 has learnt to foil the nursery teachers and told me last week that yes he had been for a poo but waits until they are not looking to sneak to the toilet.

Modesty, huh, cant think where he gets it from.
