Help! my 2yr old loves poo!!

Right, am in a bit of state about this, my beautiful little girl (aged 2.5yrs) has started sticking her hands down her nappy every time she does a poo and smearing poo everywhere!

She has made a 'poo rainbow' across the tele 3 times in the last week (smears poo in a rainbow shape across the tele). This morning she smeared it all over her toys and yesterday she just stuck her hands down her nappy in the supermarket and shouted 'look mummy' and showed me 2 hands covered in poo!

We have tried ignoring her, really shouting at her, putting her in her room for 2mins, quietly explaining it's naughty and dirty and she just carries on. We don't know what to do! It's disgusting and because I'm pregnant the sight and smell of poo across my tele makes me throw up so poor hubby has to clear poo and sick up!

No idea where to go from here? Any ideas?

p.s - we have tried and tried potty training but she is just nowhere near ready, she has no idea when she's going to wee and was getting quite stressed about us going on about her potty so HV suggested we leave it for a month or so.

HELP!!

p.s - my mother in law is constantly saying that my daughter is very slow at being potty trained and that we're 'not trying hard enough'. We don't think she is ready though, she wees on the floor and always looks really surprised as though she has no idea that she was going to have one!

firstly, ignore MIL...!!!

We have a similar problem with DS (2.3) first thing in the morning, often poo all over the sheets, duvet cover, his hands, legs etc. I can't really think of anything to do about it either. that's not very helpful is it, but knowing you're not alone might make it a bit better (I hope!).

Maybe you need to watch her really really really carefully so that you can change her the moment she does a poo to avoid her being able to get her hands down there! Is it always the same kind of time of day?

If it is any consolation my dd used to eat hers! Yum. Pleased to say she is now 4 and as repulsed by poo as the rest of us.
Try and get some vests with poppers on so that she cannot get her little mits down her nappy. I know it is warm, but buy some pretty ones and just use them to get you through this phase.
Ignore you MIL. As far as I can tell, everyone over the age of 50 seems to think that their babies were potty trained from 3 months of age. You know your daughter best!
Good luck.

Hi

Came on here to see if anyone else was having this problem so i'm glad to see this message posted!

My little boy - 21 months - has greeted us in the morning 3 times now with poo smeared all over his hands and back and sheets and cot and books - all with a big 'look what ive done mummy' smile...! he has only had it on his face once but i'm sure that's going to happen more.

i dont want to shout at him cos i dont want to screw him up about pooing before we start potty training, but i need him to know it's wrong. At the moment he thinks its great because he gets lots of early morning attention and the fun of an extra bath!

he would be able to get his hands in an all-in-one sleepsuit because he could undo the poppers - any other suggestions...?

JanandDan, put the sleepsuits on back to front so he can't undo the poppers.

thats a great idea!, almost getting him in a straightjacket!! do you think if i do that for a while he will forget about doing it any more? i also have an 11 week old boy so the amount of washing getting done is bad enough as it is!

anniediv · 23/08/2006 15:36

Well give it a try, also see if putting the nappy on back to front might slow him down. Good luck to all you parents of poo loving babies (it is normal by the way!), but do sympathise with having to clean poo whilst having morning sickness. Just think what great stories these will be to embarass them at their 18th birthday parties, stag night etc!!!

Dungerees with no poppers on the bottom - irritating to change put its the only way I can stop my son from playing with his willy, maybe it'll stop the poo thing too! And you can put a pretty popper vest underneath the dungarees, that'll really slow her down and give you time to deal with it! Thought of a huge grobag for night time, never had much of a problem with the poo side of things (my sons are just happy playing with their willies instead!)
