nappies - where to start?

We have the choice of Asda, Tesco, Lidl or Boots in our town. What are peoples experiences of their choices of nappies? Are certain brands better for girls/boys? Would like to prob buy shop brand to keep costs down if branded ones arent on offer etc. Recommendations would be greatly received. Also how many of each size to start us off & how many nappies would you go through each of the first few days roughly? Thanks

When I was pregnant the first time I really wanted to use re- usable nappies. But I was having twins so decided to start with disposables and see how things went. Of course it was chaos and I was glad I didn't have extra laundry to worry about!
I've used Pampers, Asdas and Sainburys own. For little ones I do think Pampers are best as they don't leak and are soft. My twins now use any old brand of pull-ups at night, they are dry in the day. DS is only 5mo and in Pampers. Some say Huggies are better for boys but I haven't tried them, no reason to.
To start you'll need around 8 for a 24hr period.
I bought a pack of - I think - 50 size 1 before DS was born which - I think - lasted about a week. Hth.

Shamelessly marking my space. Have no idea what brand to get or what amount (some people say stock up on special offer ones, others say don't get many as different baby like different makes and you don't know how big your baby will be)

Also marking place- am currently thinking will get boxes of pampers new born size 1, 2 and 3 whrn on offer then if don't use small ones because of baby size can return. Do It need to open to bring to Hospital though? That scupper my master plan!

We started with Aldi nappies, size one, and had no problems with them. Our daughter was moved to special care where we were given size 0 pampers; though she wasn't a tiny baby these didn't look as huge on her and again we had no problems, we continued with the size 0 til 3 weeks where we moved back to Aldi size 1. We've never had a problem with them and they are very reasonably priced. My friend swears by them for her son too.

We also tried Asda's own brand but didn't like them at all - they felt different and weren't a good fit. I guess it's just trying them out and seeing what you like and what fits nicely. We're using Aldi size 2 now and still love them.

dd is 6 weeks and nearly 9lb. we have tried a few brands of size 1s.
pampers has come out top so far.
Huggies were the ones we used first, they worked well with newborn meconium but I couldn't say how absorbent they are for after that.
Co-Op are OK, but don't cope with poo explosions. The same for
Sainsburys little ones.
Sainsburys eco little ones are odd. they say size 1-2 but printed on them is a 2 only. they are bigger, so we have put them to one side.

She is nearly growing out of pampers size one, which we now almost exclusively use. The co-op ones are there for the first nappy after a poonami now.

Hopefully we will be using cloth nappies soon!

Tallyra · 17/05/2014 18:45

oh and pampers copes with explosions and has a wetness indicator which is useful.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 17/05/2014 18:46

Asda. Perfect!

Parsnipcake · 17/05/2014 18:57

I'm a foster carer of babies and use them all - I love aldi nappies generally, cheap and good. For some babies who have massive poos or are very wet, I use pampers baby dry, especially at night when they are sleeping through.

I probably use about 6-8 a day on a newborn, some pooh constantly! Weights do cross over a lot, so you could buy just 1 pack of size 1 and a couple of 2s. It's easy enough to get more 1s if you need them. Or you could get a few 1s and use them on follies when your baby is older - that's what we do!

Dollies not follies

There are other things to take into account, where do you do the bulk of your shopping? What to they stock? That's where we started!
Dd started on huggies, but then they stopped them, she went onto asda little angels (never had a problem with them), however we are now shopping at Tesco and have trialed the super dooper cheap packs of Tesco value nappies.... Exactly the bloody same and half the price! Due ds in July, and will be starting on Tesco loves baby until they bulk out a bit, as leaks are going to happen regardless!

Also, remember that not all nappies are the same on all babies.. We found pampers horrific for dd, smelt chemically and leaked even with a wee! thank god, saved us a fortune!

Good luck!!

trilbydoll · 17/05/2014 19:56

We didn't like pampers and boots own gave DD nappy rash immediately. Worth saying though that they took back the 2 unopened packs and refunded me in full so the open pack was free!

We use Sainsburys and Morrisons but liked the Aldi samples we had when she was tiny. I was horrified at the price of Tesco ones, they are not much cheaper than branded.

beanynamechange · 19/05/2014 08:54

trilby Tesco loves baby are on 2 for £10, I assume all the time the same as asda..am I wrong in thinking that? Am I going to be spending a fortune on nappies?!
