COD, I need help

Im about to potty train my ds (2.6), hes seems more than ready, and tbh, its me holding back iykwim.
I need some tips! I often go out in the day, is it best to stay in during the whole potty training period time, or to put nappies on him while we go out?

Any times appreciated. Thanks

hi, sorry I'm not an expert like cod! but have recently done this with dd and here's what we did:

used no nappies at all except at night, and for long car journeys (my in laws live in Bristol). Don't use pullups when you go out, this confuses the issue

stayed in for the first few days. After that ventured out (not too far) with changes of clothes!

kept reminding dd about the potty/toilet, especially if it was > 1 hr since she last went. (in that case we put her on the potty anyway). If she did it right gave loads of praise. Didnt make a big deal of accidents, just reminded what the potty is for.

no matter what the books say, my experience (and my friends) is that wee often comes before poo! my dd still has poo accidents but not many wee.

cod will give better advice im sure.
good luck!

I have done it four times and my top tip 9and I know Cod agrees with me here) is don't wait for the child to ask for the loo/potty. Keep insisting they sit on it in the early days to keep accidents down to a minimum and to give the child lots of experience of getting the wee in the right place. Later on, you can start leaving it to them to decide when they need to go, but even then, insist they use the potty/loo before going out, even if they say they don't need to. They can pretty well always do a dribble!

Thanks for that, we want to do it before he gets into playschool again, and tbh, my ds is asking for the potty and as soon as hes wet, he asks to be changed!

I just need to take that first big step!

Good luck! Am two weeks into it with dd, and I held back for ages too (fertility treatment, then morning sickness, then holidays...just loads of reasons ). She's 2.7 now, and very few accidents after two weeks.
Just wanted to say I agree with DDG and Cod re initiating....I have done this, and after about a week/10 days dd has started knowing when she needs to go (she didnt' have a clue before). I still put her on if its been a while, or if we've just come in or are about to go out - and before bed, of course. For us, tbh, the first few days I used pull-ups out and nothing at home - then dropped the pull-ups when out (except on long car journeys). She doesn't seem confused at all, still holds on to pee in the potty...but it probably depends on the child.
Was just thinking today how enormous it all seemed two weeks ago, and how easy it seems with hindsight - wishing you the same, and bon courage!

Like Cod I've done it three times now (all boys, in fact DS3 just finished this last day or so )

Agree that it's important to keep reminding them at first. We have several savers style potties through the house, plus a loo seat with steps built in in the loo. So he is always near one. Every twenty minuets or so we just say 'Where's [otty, do you need a wee wee' and off he goes, or says 'No......'

I have been mainly at home TBH, although if we want to go out we just take spare trousers and head for the loo a few times whilst we are there. CM has taken him out with no problems, using same tactic. And you can put a potty in the car easily enough.

Personally, I think nappies confuse children being trained, and unless you have a long journey then they are best avoided. Also, we put themin Savers nappies for a few weeks prior so they learn to feel damp although real nappy users (which we were until we moved actually) have a head start on that one.

HTH

Thanks for all the advice. I just need the courage to do it (main problem is having a ten month old!!).

Go for it jo. I potty trained the DTs who are the same age as your DS. As has been said before. Once you decide to do it put the nappies away.

Have fun
