Cloth - How often do you change your little one?

Just wondering how often I should be changing ds's nappy (he's 17mths). I've been using cloth for the past week now and he is soaking through a nappy in under 2 hours.
is there anything that will help make them last longer or does every 2 hours seem about right?
I'm using tots bots, ellas house, little rippers and some stuffables, All seem to get really wet.

they will get really wet lol.

about every 2-3hours, 4-5 nappies a day i guess.

burstingbug · 05/08/2006 14:13

ok, nothing to panic about too much then. I'll keep changing 2hourly ish then and wash every day.
Thanks misdee

Do you use boosters? I always use boosters and dd's nappies last 2-3 hours.

I've started to use boosters, they don't make much difference to be honest

They will be soaking (they seem v.wet in comparison to a disposable), but this only matters if they are leaking onto your DS's clothes.

What are you boosting with? Microfibre cloths are good, and you can use them between the nappy and the wrap if putting them in the nappy makes them too bulky.

intergalacticwalrus · 06/08/2006 13:27

I was going to say that getting a wet nappy every 2 hours sounds about right. I cahnage DS (20 mo) every 2-3 hours, and his nappy is usually wringing! I find using a fleece liner (which I made by cutting up a cheap fleece balnket) stops his bum from getting too sodden, thereby leaving a slightly longer window between changes (apologies if I am preaching to the convertyed. I imagine you do this already!)

intergalacticwalrus · 06/08/2006 13:29

Will agree with Laura that they seem wetter in comparison to disps, as they haven't got lots of gel crap and plastic liners in them to stop them appearing wet. As long as his clothes are dry, then things are ok. Have never used microfibre boosters, but hvae heard they are v good

I'm not sure what the boosters are made of, they came off of ebay along with some shaped terry nappies. I have 1 hemp booster which came from here which i use in one of the stuffables. Might try some fleece - good excuse to cut something up
How often would you change a new born? baby is due this week, I have 2 packs of disposables which i'll use first, then going into cloth.

With a newborn, you will be changing all the time, as they poo all the time! I tend to change at every major feed - at least two hourly.

Lots of no nappy time too - terry squares are fab for lying underneath them to catch all the poo!

intergalacticwalrus · 06/08/2006 14:12

We are thinking when new baby arrives (due in 5 weeks)he/she will need 6-8 changes per day. We have 15 nappies (bumbles) and I think we will be fine if I buy an extra 5.

Fleece liners are a great idea, esp if you just cut up an old blanket, as if they get too soiled etc, they can just be chucked. They also stay fairly dry to the touch

Laura032004 · 06/08/2006 14:15

I've just said this on another thread, but terry squares make great back up nappies for newborns. DS is in them full time at the moment, as they dry so quickly and we're going through loads as he poo's so much. I would hate to be trying to get 15 Tots dry every day!

I couldn't cope on 6 a day, as DS often poos 5 minutes after a nappy change, so we might change a few nappies every two hours, and then go through three in five minutes. Good liners can help with some of this though if you can just change the liner and not the nappy.

burstingbug · 06/08/2006 16:36

I do have some terry squares, so i may investigate folds. which fold works for you and ds laura?

my DD is 3 mths and she can get a good 4 hrs out of a tots and 3 out of a MEOS. i origionally changed her every 2 hrs until i got used to the fact that the nappy was always going to feel wet.

Witchycat · 07/08/2006 20:29

Burstingbug - dd is 19 months and about every 2 hours is about right for her - especially in this hot weather as she is drinking loads. Maybe slightly less often when she's not drinking as much.

TBH, I let her go nappy free whenever it's warm enough in the garden. Saves on the washing !

CorrieDale · 07/08/2006 20:35

I change DS (14 months) every 3-4 hours. He isn't a heavy wetter though. Like Laura, we can also go through three nappies in 20 minutes because he is a child who likes to poo in a nice clean nappy.

TicTacsMum · 07/08/2006 20:39

Burstingbug - muslins also good on a newborn. Fold same as a terry. You'll find some good folds on the nappy lady website. I think I started out with the newborn or poo catcher fold but you'll probably find that you adapt the fold to suit your baby. I used muslins till dd was 7 months and would still use them if I had no tots dry.
