Dd is having hers soon, what happens? We've been given a form to fill in with some questions about ability etc.

They basically ask if you have any concerns about your child's development. They might observe them playing, ask them some questions about what they are doing.

That's about it.

Think of it as a chance for you to ask any questions you might have, you probably won't see a HV again unless you ask for an appt.

yummymumtobe · 30/01/2014 23:21

They just check height and weight, check their development etc so have variety of toys out to see how they play with them, what they can name etc. also a nice chance for you to ask any questions ( eg about potty training etc)

WingardiumLeveosaaa · 30/01/2014 23:27

Height, weight, general discussion about behaviour followed my a jigsaw like task for them to do to assess various forms of development.

For my DS it was a shapes jigsaw, how high they can build a tower of blocks, whether he was walking correctly and not on tip toes, how he sleeps, what he eats, what I do with him etc. I would take it with a pinch of salt as my DS had his at 19 months and then got 'marked down' - A suppose they just have to do it, you'll be fine

FlyAwayToMalibu · 31/01/2014 09:39

Jigsaws? I don't think dd has ever played with a jigsaw in her life. Oh well.

Don't worry my son had his in the play room of the clinic. Ridiculous he spotted the toy dyson Hoover . We couldn't get it off him. He even hit the HV with the hose when she tried. Anyway he's still with us now at 3.5 they didn't put him in foster carrot anything. He was very verbal in telling her exactly what he'd rather do instead of the jigsaw . She said he was fine :-)

spritesoright · 01/02/2014 20:13

We had to go through along checklist of things beforehand like stacking blocks and switching a light switch, unscrewing a lid.
She didn't get 'tested' on any of them at the appointment and HV just took my word for it (not that I'd lie) and asked if I had any concerns.
She seemed very impressed that DD cleaned up her tiys afterwards. Funny enough, DD identified a 'hipohotamus' from her book just as HV was asking about vocabulary- so my coaching paid off Wink

breatheslowly · 01/02/2014 20:22

It's nothing to worry about. I dropped DD on her head during hers and the nursery nurse who did it (not the HV here) didn't seem bothered. She also said that since DD is at a good nursery, she would expect the nursery to flag any problems. In all honesty, it seemed like a bit of a waste of time, but presumably they pick up problems with a few children and can put support in quickly to make a big difference to that child's progress.

icravecheese · 01/02/2014 20:28

Is this done at exactly 2 years, or something random like 2yrs 3 months? Waiting for letter from HV about DC3 and can't remember if she should have had it by now (she's 2yrs 3 months & they're usually very good in my area with making appointments etc). DC3 is not talking much so I wanted them to check all ok and whether worth going doing speech therapist route....

breatheslowly · 01/02/2014 20:41

I think some areas do 2.5 and others do 2. They can also be a bit different in when they get round to contacting you. Some of our friends had their 2.5 check at about 2 and 4 months, my DD's was at 2 and 7 months as we have a different set of HV.

If you have a concern then don't feel you have to wait - just go to a drop in session.

FlyAwayToMalibu · 01/02/2014 22:41

It went absolutely fine, she built some blocks in a tower, described some flash cards, put some pieces in a puzzle, and chatted about potty training. Nothing too exciting at all!

Our area don't see them beyond 6 weeks!

FlyAwayToMalibu · 01/02/2014 22:42

25-27 months I believe breathes

It must vary by area, ours was definitely 2.5 and it was less than a year ago.
