Single bed for two year old

Ds is 2.5yo and dc2 is due in April. He is currently in the cot bed (without sides) and we were thinking to get him a single bed. But is he too young? We won't need the cot for another 7-8months, by which time he'll be 3yo. Are we better off waiting until then?

If not, any recommendations for a first full size single child's bed? Low to floor preferably! :)

I've just seen the ikea kura bed online and think it's fab...bad idea?

We just put DD (2.4) into a single from her cot bed. I wanted to do it before the baby comes so she doesn't feel she's being pushed out. Only two nights in but she loves it and hasn't fallen out as I feared. One nice thing is that she is now in a duvet instead of her grobag and this allows her to get out and walk into ours in the morning (instead of shouting 'Mummy!').

Remarkably she doesn't do this at bedtime...

my DS1 went straight from his cot to a full size single at 2.2yrs, no problems at all. he had a bedguard for about 4/5 months. he loved the bed but didnt want the duvet, he wanted to stay in his sleeping bag/gro bag so we let him. he moved to a duvet at about 3.4/5yrs i think.

My DD was 2.5 or so when she climbed out of her cot and that night she went into a full single bed. We put a rolled up blanket under the sheet to stop her rolling out. The next day I bought a pool noodle and did the same thing. She only rolled out once. If she was a roller I think I would have put a spare mattress in the floor beside her for a while.

My DS (2y3m) is in a single bed but it's the type that can slide under another bed & has foldable legs. We put it together without the legs on so he's barely higher than if he was just on a mattress. Seems to work well for him. He's getting to the stage of dropping naps now so I just pop him in his room with a few toys available & either he'll play for a while or he'll put himself to bed!

Moving DD (2.5) into a single in a couple of weeks. She is tall and has had the sides down on the cot for about 6 months now. Someone else wants our cot and we are moving, so I thought it would be a good time to do it. Just wondering - do any of you have bed guards on still? I wanted to have her bed with only the head to the wall, but wondering how to do this with only one bed guard. Can you use 2 (one either side) or should I have her next to the wall to start? I am sure I read something about using swimming noodles somewhere... Or should we just not bother at all?

we had DS1 against a wall with a wooden bed guard on the other side but he likes to be pressed against something solid to sleep, stil at 4.1 he squeezes himself up to the wall.

When the DTs go to beds they will be in the middle of the room and i was going to get them those dream tubes for them - which has the added advantage of being portable for holidays etc!!
