panicking that I might have given my baby food poisoning! Will she be OK?

I feel really bad because I can't believe I've done this (without thinking....). I gave my 6 month old a portion of a chicken puree meal I'd made and defrosted in the fridge overnight. She only seems to like food cold so I just gave it straight to her in its defrosted state but not re-heated. I know I should have heated it until piping hot (I think) and then let it cool before giving it to her and now I'm really worried she might get food poisoning! She brought some of it up a few hours later and has been rather unsettled this afternoon/eve but still had a breastfeed this afternoon and a full bottle this evening before bed (I'm mix feeding) and I think that she was just overtired this afternoon.

Do you think she'll be OK? I'm panicking a bit....(OK, a lot!!)

I think that's fine (bit not good with this stuff)
If you'd done it with a chicken breast then used it cold in salad that would be ok.
I get so confused about this stuff

addictedtosugar · 25/01/2014 19:57

Its not best practice, but since she's fine at the moment, I suspect you've done no damage.

So of you wanted cold chicken breast for salad would you reheat and recoil it?

I think it's fine so long as it was thoroughly cooked in the first place? I've certainly fed my DC many defrostedpurees without heating them to piping hot first and they are both completely fine. Includes purees with chicken in them.

I've read up and realised that if you've cooked a chicken dish and then frozen it, you should then reheat until piping hot (to kill any bacteria) and then let it cool! I feel so terrible! I know what you mean about using chicken cold but the guidelines are always to reheat to piping hot - I feel so terrible!! I really hope she'll be OK :(

obviously defrosting it before you reheat....

thanks mrsmalcolmreynolds - I feel a bit better. It was definitely thoroughly cooked before being frozen.....I've been pretty stressed today with the 2 of them on my own and I just gave it to her without thinking!! Didn't even slightly warm it! I'm sure she'll be OK but it was a thoughtless and potentially dangerous thing to do.....

I had been given DD defrosted but not reheated chicken and turkey for about two months before I realised it had to be reheated to piping hot...She is 6 now and still fine.....

pixielove · 25/01/2014 20:19

phew thanks hels71!! It's such a horrible thing to realise! I'm glad your dd is OK :)

I am sure your DD will be too! I decided to think that not heated at all was better than slightly heated!!!

I work for environmental health and I did loads of this type of thing!

in the first place if it's properly cooked, hygienically handled and cooled quickly there shouldn't be much growing on it.

the food poisoning bug usually associated with chicken takes 2-5 days to make you ill after eating it anyway - but as others have said im sure she will be fine x
