Nailbite on her thumbnail? Giving her something else as a 'habit' to do instead?

Sometimes the harder you try to subvert something the more alluring it becomes.

A friend's parents asked her aged 11, “Will you walk down the aisle with your thumb in your mouth?” She didn't do it at school just in the car or at home so she could control the urge if she wanted to. Her parents tried to dissuade her with bribes, promises, nagging, star charts. One day her DM said, "I give in! If you want to suck your thumb, it's up to you, your choice". She found she didn't need to any more soon after.

Thumbguard! We used one for DS (3) and it was amazing (mumsnet recommendation from another post!). He was thumb sucking constantly- it was misaligning his jaw, his speech wasn't developing and his poor thumb was so sore.... 3 weeks in a thumb guard all day and night, plus another 2 weeks at night only and he's never sucked it again.

Where do I get a thumb guard? We used plasters yesterday. She sucks both of them bless her, alternating between the 2. She does want to stop so I guess that helps. I feel soeey for her!

Not sure if my link will work, but just google thumb guard...

www.thumbguard.co.uk

I've just realised that your daughter is 8- you're supposed to wear it all the time for the first few weeks- she might not want to wear it at school, but it will only be for a short while. Alternatively if she never sucks her thumb at school you could out it on as soon as she gets home.

I was very cynical about this, but desperate. Lots of people on mumsnet gave me very positive stories, and it worked for us.
